About Origin Broadband

Origin is a young telecoms company based in the Yorkshire market town of Doncaster. It has invested millions in building its own internet network, making it one of only a few providers that aren’t 100% reliant on the BT-owned infrastructure.

The Origin-owned network currently only covers parts of Yorkshire and the surrounding areas, but the broadband services themselves are available nationwide. Prices are competitive and currently start from £16.49 per month.

Bundles

Origin Broadband is available with a call plan or as broadband-only. Either way ypu will need to pay line rental, which is now included in the monthly price. Phone packages cost extra and the options are inclusive calls to UK landlines at evenings and weekends, or anytime calls. There’s no international calls package.

Speed

Origin offers three main broadband packages and the differentiating factor is speed. Customers can choose from one standard broadband service (17Mbps) and two fibre services (38Mbps and 76Mbps), depending on availability in your area.

The advertised speeds are the maximum customers receive and, as is the case with all broadband services, speeds vary widely and depend upon many different factors. Origin’s broadband services are yet to be tested by Ofcom to confirm how fast they perform in practice.

Extras

Origin lacks the extra perks offered by its larger rivals, but there are a few features you may find useful. Firstly, there’s a choice of three routers: a standard (free) version and two more advanced models (£89.99 and £124.99). Origin states that its services are compatible with most routers on the market, so you don’t have to buy either if you already have one at home.

Line rental saver plans

Origin offers two line rental saver plans to reduce the cost of this unavoidable monthly fee. By paying an upfront cost for 12 or 24 months, customers can save between £43.39 and £131.77 against the standard charge of £18.49 per month over the course of their contract.

Refer a friend

If you’re happy with your broadband service and recommend Origin to a friend, you get a £25 credit to your account to help cover your next bill if they subsequently join the provider.
