Origin Fibre review

Based in Yorkshire, Origin is a relative newcomer to the broadband market but is thriving. If you’re interested in broadband from a small but rapidly growing provider, it is certainly worth a look.

Origin offers one of the cheapest unlimited fibre broadband deals in the country. It comes with truly unlimited usage and 24/7 support from its Yorkshire-based help centre.

Cable.co.uk overall rating

Origin Broadband Fibre is a well-priced broadband plan with truly unlimited usage and a download speed up to 38Mb. Drawbacks include lack of proven speed, little in the way of extras and a no-frills router.

Speed & usage

Origin Broadband Fibre is one of the provider’s two fibre optic broadband deals. It’s the entry-level option with an advertised speed of up to 38Mb, which is pretty standard for starter fibre services in the UK. It’s faster than standard broadband but certainly not the fastest in the market; you can get up to 76Mb with the top Origin Fibre package, and up to 300Mb elsewhere.

However, 38Mb may be just what you need. This speed is ample for pretty much all online activities, from gaming and watching catch up TV, to streaming films and video calling. It can usually handle several devices connected at once, but the more you add, the slower it will become, so you may want to upgrade if your family spends a huge amount of time online.

All Origin broadband deals are truly unlimited. This means no usage cap is buried in the small print, and there is no traffic management policy to actively slow your service down. That said, some slowdown may be experienced due to network congestion at peak times (evenings and weekends).

Call plan

You don’t get an inclusive call plan with Origin Fibre by default, you simply pay the standard rate for the calls that you make. You can add a call plan from £3.49 extra per month and have a choice between evening and weekend calls or an anytime call package. Inclusive calls are only valid when made to other UK landlines and are only free for the first 60 minutes.

Line rental is already included in the monthly advertised price of £23.99. That said, it is possible to cut the cost of your package with one of Origin’s Supersaver plans, whereby you pay for the whole contract upfront at a discounted price, saving up to 15% on the total cost.

Origin doesn’t have the extra features offered by the more mainstream providers – such as public wi-fi and parental controls. However, there are a few features that may pique your interest. First up, the customer support centre is 24/7 and UK-based. The centre is based in Doncaster, Yorkshire and is free to call. Origin also has a responsive Twitter feed to deal with general queries quickly.

The next feature is a referral scheme. Happy Origin customers who refer a friend or family-member get a £25 bill credit their referral signs up to an Origin service.

Value for money

With prices starting at £23.99 per month (line rental included) Origin Fibre is well priced compared to many other unlimited fibre broadband plans.

You can save on the overall cost if you’re willing to pay for your entire 18-month contract upfront. It’s the exact same package but at discount of over 15%. If you cancel early, however, you won’t be entitled to a refund.

Equipment & installation

Sign up to Origin Fibre and you’ll get an ASUS DSL-N16 router included free with postage and packaging on the house. It’s ideal for connecting several devices to your home network at once. To maximise your router’s wireless performance, we recommend placing it centrally within your home and in an elevated position - such as a shelf - if possible.

You can upgrade to the ASUS DSL-AC56U for £89.99 or to the ASUS DSL-AC68U for £124.99m which is the top-of-the-range model. These come with a greater array of specifications, but the average user will likely be happy with the one you get for free.

Installation is free, providing you already have a compatible landline. If you don’t, you’ll have to have one installed at a cost of £48.

Overall Rating

Origin is a viable alternative to the big mainstream broadband providers. This entry-level fibre service is fairly priced for a truly unlimited plan and although extra features are limited, the UK support centre will certainly attract some interest. The 38Mb download speed will be suitable for many households that multi-task online, but large families with loads of devices on wi-fi may benefit from a faster service.

Well I'm not impressed. The speed isn't as promised. The waiting times for assistance are abysmal.

It's important to note that Origin now offer an all in one ASUS N300 router for Fibre and ADSL (not a technicolor) - and also give the option to upgrade to a top spec device if needed.
