If you are a small business, this package may be right up your street. Although the connection speed is a modest 18Mbps, it is sufficient for a small business. However, if you decide to add on any extras, the monthly cost will start to rise.

Speed & usage

Rating

3

Plusnet offers a download speed of 18Mbps with this package, which is ample for a small business and will comfortably meet the needs of a dozen devices or computers on one network. It also comes with unlimited usage so you can download as much as you like without having to worry about any restrictions. The drawback is the 1.3Mbps upload speed, which could slow things down considerably, especially if you rely on VoIP services to conduct meetings and upload files regularly. If this is the case, it may be better to opt for a package with a higher upload speed.

It is worth noting that Plusnet operates a traffic management policy, meaning your connection will be slowed down during peak times to ensure there is enough bandwidth for everyone across the network. So you will find your online activity could slow down during certain times.

Rating

3

You can get advanced security by purchasing the Enhanced Care package for an additional £8.50 per month. Any issues will be fast-tracked and the support team will aim to get any faults repaired within 24 hours. This includes any work that needs an engineer outside usual working hours, which are 8am to 8pm, Monday to Friday.

Extras

Rating

3

For a budget provider, Plusnet offers quite a few extras. A static IP address is available on request for free. This is particularly useful for running a website, setting up your own secure Virtual Private Network and accessing your computer remotely. You’ll also get one free web address and 250MB of web space if you choose a broadband and phone plan, or two free addresses and 500MB if you go broadband-only. Both plans offer unlimited email addresses.

If you choose to add a phone line, you will automatically be put on a pay-as-you-go package where you will be charged the standard rates per call, but you can upgrade your call plan to UK Anytime or UK Anytime Mobile and International for an extra monthly fee, which will save you money if you make a lot of calls.

If your company relies on uploading files and VoIP services, you can increase your upload speed to 2.5Mbps via the Annex-M add-on for an extra £10 per month. However, availability of this is limited according to area, plus you’ll have to sacrifice a small amount of download speed in return.

Value for money

Rating

At first glance, the monthly price looks very attractive, but you may find you end up spending a lot more. This package currently costs £13.50 per month for the first 12 months, then £13 thereafter. However this only applies on a 24-month contract. If you choose a 12-month contract, or a rolling one-month contract, the price rises considerably. Regardless of contract length, you will be charged for line rental at £10.50 per month, and depending on which contract you choose, you may also incur an activation fee, as well as a charge for the router.

Plusnet’s prices are determined by the area in which you live. If there are providers operating in your area other than BT, you will pay the advertised rate, which is also the cheapest. However, for those who only have BT in their area, the monthly price will be higher than advertised. For more information on this policy, refer to the terms and conditions.

Equipment & installation

If you choose to take out a 12- or 24-month contract, you’ll receive the Sagemcom 2704n router free of charge, apart from a £4.99 fee for postage and packaging. The router operates on single band technology, meaning your wi-fi connection will be slower than that provided by a dual band router.

You could face an installation charge of up to £50, depending on whether you have a pre-existing compatible phone line. You will find out whether you need a line installed during the order process. This will only apply if you take out a one-month or 12-month contract. There is no installation charge on the 24-month contract.

The up to 18Mbps connection and unlimited usage make this package ideal for small businesses. However, taking the pricing zones, extra costs and slow upload speed into account, you may end up splashing out a lot more than you intended.
