Primus Saver 20GB broadband review

Wednesday, November 4th 2015

This service is no longer available from Primus Saver, which is now called Fuel. If you'd like to read a review of Fuel's broadband package, you can do so here. Primus Saver claims that its 20GB Broadband package is cheaper than a cup of coffee. At £1.20 per month, it’s pretty spot on. Primus Saver positions itself clearly at the budget end of the broadband market, and this 20GB Broadband package is the cheapest plan it has to offer customers.

So what is it like? As you might expect, broadband this cheap isn’t exactly laden with extras and special features, but what you do get might surprise you. Here is everything you need to know about Primus Saver 20GB Broadband, from speed and usage through to the price of installation.

Cable.co.uk overall rating

The Primus Saver 20GB Broadband package is one of the cheapest broadband plans on the market. For £1.20 a month, you get a solid ADSL2+ service, along with free calls to UK landlines on evenings and weekends. Drawbacks include the usage cap and the low-quality router. The speed isn’t great either, but is more than enough for the majority of online activities.

Speed & usage

For the price that you’re paying, you won’t be getting fibre optic speeds. Primus Saver broadband has an advertised download speed of up to 15Mbps, which is fast enough for the majority of online activities. This is slower than the ADSL2+ speeds offered by other providers. Sky’s basic broadband package, for example, has an advertised download speed of up to 17Mbps.

The advertised speed of a broadband package is rarely what you’ll see at home. Most of the time your download rate will be lower than this. There are several reasons why this may be the case, including your property’s distance from the nearest exchange, traffic on the line, and where you position your broadband router.

Upload speeds are also relatively slow, at up to 1Mbps. This still allows you to post photos and videos to Facebook and other sites; you’ll just have to wait for the transfers to take place.

This Primus broadband package is subject to a 20GB fair usage policy. Over the course of a month, you can only download or upload 20GB worth of data. This plants the package firmly in light user territory. If you only use the internet for an hour a day, and engage in light activities (such as emailing and browsing) you should stay beneath this limit. Moderate to heavy users should consider the unlimited broadband options Primus Saver has to offer instead. Call plan

Primus Saver broadband speed is not lightning-fast, but its basic call plan more than makes up for it. The 20GB Broadband package features free evening and weekend calls to UK landlines as standard, all as part of your £1.20 a month fee.

Calls made to UK landlines outside of these times are charged at 7.4p per minute. Calls to UK mobiles start at 12p per minute on weekends, up to 16p per minute during weekdays.

A couple of call features are included for free with this package. Withhold number and 1471 last caller ID are both included at no extra cost. Other call features can be added for a recurring monthly fee. You can further enhance your phone plan with the Primus home phone saver package.

Primus Saver has one of the cheapest basic line rental prices of any broadband provider. Primus line rental will set you back £13.99 per month. Even with line rental included, this is still one of the cheapest broadband phone packages currently available in the UK.

As a budget provider, Primus Saver doesn’t offer many extras for its broadband customers. A lack of frills helps keep costs down, but there are a couple of extras you’ll get with your 20GB Broadband package.

When you sign up, Primus will send you a free wireless router. This lets you get connected to the net at home, and set-up doesn’t require an engineer. The router you’ll receive is the Thomson TG582N – a fairly basic model.

Free Primus Tech Support is included with the 20GB Broadband package. With this extra, if you’re having Primus Saver broadband problems, you can contact Primus Tech Support for help and advice.

If you sign up online you can double the data cap from 20GB to 40GB by entering an upgrade code. This potentially allows you to double the amount of time you spend online in a month, and opens up the ability to stream videos and music off the web without worrying about your download cap quite so much.

As we’ve already mentioned, Primus Saver’s 20GB Broadband package is one of the cheapest broadband deals available online in the UK. For £1.20 per month (along with £13.99 per month line rental) you get a solid broadband connection, a great call plan, and even a couple of minor extras. For anyone looking for broadband on a strict budget, this is ideal.

If you take advantage of the double data upgrade you effectively double the value of this package. The 40GB data cap should give all light users – and quite a few moderate users – free rein to use the internet without worrying about additional fees for excess use. It’s worth remembering that if you do pass this data limit, you’ll be charged £2 for every additional gigabyte used.

The line rental fee is consistently cheap for the life of your broadband package. Unfortunately, there isn’t the choice to pay for a year’s line rental up front – an option that can often save you money with other broadband providers.

Installation for this broadband package is free, along with internet activation and new line installation.

The Primus Saver 20GB Broadband package comes with a Thomson TG582N router, the same router that comes with the budget options of many other providers, including Plusnet and Tesco broadband. It lacks the technology of some swankier routers, but it will get you online with minimal fuss.

It resembles a set of bathroom scales, so it’s not the flashiest-looking piece of hardware. There are four 10/100 ports for wired Ethernet connections on the reverse, along with a single wireless band and a 2x2 antenna array for connecting Wi-Fi devices such as your smartphone or tablet. As a budget option, it’s more than fit for purpose, and comes with a two-year warranty.

The router is free, apart from the £4.95 delivery charge, and all installation for your Primus Saver broadband is free. You won’t have to pay for broadband activation, existing number transferral, or even a new phone line.

Overall Rating

The Primus Saver 20GB Broadband package is ideal for light users or those who want a simple broadband plan without any unnecessary extras. For budget-conscious broadband hunters it’s even better, as the monthly £1.20 fee makes this one of the cheapest broadband deals around.

The usage cap isn’t great for moderate or heavy users. Instead of risking being charged for excess use, it may be better to opt for a broadband package with unlimited usage.
