Fuel 76Mb Business Fibre broadband review

Fuel Broadband is a budget provider of home broadband, but it also offers a range of business packages. This is the top package on offer, and might be worth consideration if you are looking for an inexpensive fibre connection for your business.

It comes with a download speed of up to 76Mbps, unlimited usage and a free static IP address, but its shortcomings in technical support and equipment are an important part of the picture.

Cable.co.uk overall rating
2.2

This package comes with a download speed of up to 76Mbps and is practical for the requirements of a small- to medium-sized business. However, there is a lack of technical support and not much in the way of useful extras. If you would be happy with a basic but fast broadband service, then this could be worth a look.

Speed & usage

Rating

4

With a download speed of 76Mbps, this is the fastest of the two fibre packages from Fuel Broadband – the other comes in at a slower 38Mbps. A download speed of 76Mbps will comfortably support several devices on one network. The upload speed of 19Mbps is particularly useful if you upload large files and use VoIP services to conduct meetings with employees and clients, as it should ensure a smooth connection.

This package comes with unlimited usage, although Fuel does use traffic management and has a fair usage policy. If you go over the limit of 100GB per month, Fuel will contact you to advise you to reduce your usage. If you continue to go over the limit, you will be warned a second time before the provider slows your connection.

Technical support

Rating

1

In comparison to other providers, Fuel’s technical support doesn’t do well. If you have an issue with your broadband, telephone support is available during normal business hours. Some faults can be repaired remotely, while others will need an engineer callout. Fuel states that an engineer will be sent out within 72 hours. How long it takes to repair an issue will depend on the fault itself, but if your business relies on a constant broadband connection, this support may well be inadequate for your needs.

Extras

Rating

2

Fuel Broadband doesn’t offer a lot of extras. However, there is a choice of two call plans you can add to your broadband package. The cheaper plan consists of 500 UK minutes, with calls to UK landlines costing 1p per minute after you go over the allowance. Alternatively, for an extra £5 you can make unlimited UK calls to 01, 02 and 03 numbers. Just bear in mind that if a call goes over 90 minutes you will be charged the standard rate.

A single static IP address is available on request as part of this package. If you need to host your own private or public server, an IP address is necessary.

Value for money

Rating

2

This fibre package sits comfortably in the middle of the price range scale. The monthly fee roughly equates to that of home fibre broadband packages, at £29.99 per month. However, if you choose to add in an unlimited call plan, that price increases. There is also a line rental cost of £9.99 per month to factor in.

There is an installation cost of £80 per month and £5.49 delivery charge for the router. Although the relatively low monthly costs are appealing, the technical support is poor and there is little in the way of useful extras on offer. If you are happy with a basic, but fast broadband connection, then this package presents reasonably good value, but if you want the reassurance of reliable technical support and a few more extras, then you might want to look elsewhere.

Equipment & installation

Rating

2

This package comes with a Thomson TG582n wireless router, which works on single-band technology and will struggle to send a clear and reliable signal throughout your premises, especially with several devices connected to it. The installation is pretty straightforward and will cost £80. It will take approximately seven to ten days to get your broadband up and running from the date of purchase. To get the best from this package, you may want to invest in a separate dual-band router, which will more comfortably support the speed.

Primus Saver Router

Overall Rating

2.2

With Fuel, you get what you pay for. This business package comes with a download speed of 76Mbps and an upload speed of 19Mbps, but the solid technical support you would expect from a business provider is not on offer. Having said that, if speed is all you need, then it might just do the job.
