SSE broadband reviews

Energy companies are rarely the first places that jump to mind when looking for home broadband. However, SSE offers a selection of competitively priced standard and fibre broadband deals, with a £5 monthly discount for existing energy customers.

All SSE broadband packages come with unlimited usage and no fixed contract. Even better, monthly prices are fixed for three years. You also get free security software and a free broadband router. Traffic management applies, however, and installation takes around three weeks.

About SSE broadband

Broadband isn’t SSE’s main focus. SSE is an energy company, providing gas and electricity to UK homes, and that’s where it’s main interests lie. However, its broadband plans, which sit in the budget-broadband category, are also rather appealing.

Bundles

SSE’s collection of cheap broadband and phone packages are all the bundles available. SSE does not offer mobile or TV services. On the upside, you will receive a £5 discount on your monthly broadband bill if you are a pre-existing energy customer. When you purchase SSE online you have a choice of three call plans: line rental only, anytime calls or anytime plus, which also includes unlimited calls to mobiles and international destinations.

Availability

Standard broadband (up to 17Mb) from SSE is widely available throughout the UK. If you can make landline calls from your home, it’s likely that you’ll be able to receive SSE’s standard broadband. Fibre (up to 38Mb and 76Mb) availability is more limited, but expanding. If you can’t get it immediately you may be able to in the near future. Use our postcode checker to find out.

Speed

The advertised SSE broadband speeds match those of most other providers. Three are available: 17Mbps (standard broadband), 38Mbps (fibre broadband) and 76Mbps (ultrafast fibre). All three are sufficient for everyday online tasks, like browsing websites and streaming film and video.

As with all broadband services, the speed you’ll actually achieve is unlikely to be that advertised. It will be slower. This is due to several factors, including your home environment and the distance to the nearest cabinet.

Faster broadband is more expensive

Fibre broadband is faster than standard, but it is also more expensive. You may be tempted to choose fibre over standard for the added speed, but in truth, the extra speed won’t make much difference unless there are several regular internet users in the house, where the additional bandwidth provided by fibre will come into its own.

Extras

Extras are thin on the ground with SSE broadband. It’s a budget provider, so it keeps costs down by only offering a relatively basic service.

You will receive a free router with no delivery charges, unlimited downloads, a UK customer service centre, all on a rolling monthly contract, the price of which is fixed for three years.

All broadband packages are unlimited

All SSE's broadband packages come with unlimited usage. This means there’s no limit on how much data (such as photos, films, and music) you can download in any given month. But while it’s unlimited, it’s not truly unlimited because SSE uses traffic management. This may cause your broadband performance to be slowed at certain times, and when engaging in certain online activities, such as downloading updates.
