TalkTalk Complete Business broadband review

Of the four business packages offered by TalkTalk, Complete Business broadband is the superior of the two standard ADSL broadband services. It is well priced, unlimited, and comes with some great extras, like security software and four static IP addresses as standard.

The price of this deal looks very attractive, but are there any hidden flaws that you need to know about before you sign up? With TalkTalk's reputation for value over both frills and quality of after-sales service, it's worth finding out.

It’s not wildly fast and it comes with a fairly ordinary router, but TalkTalk’s Complete Business broadband has some good extras and is ideal for small businesses that want to get online and make calls cheaply.

Speed & usage

Rating

2

TalkTalk’s Complete Business broadband comes with a 17Mbps connection, which, while not particularly fast, is enough to support a small number of computers and devices used mostly for sending emails and browsing the internet. If you need to do much more than that, you might want to consider a faster package.

One of the major bugbears with the majority of standard broadband packages is that they come with paltry upload speeds, and the same applies here. Those looking to upload large files or use VoIP packages may find their connection too slow to support much activity. The really good news is that the package is unlimited and doesn’t have a traffic management policy hanging over it, so you can download as much as you want and your speed won’t be compromised.

Technical support

Rating

4

As part of this package, TalkTalk offers a two-stage technical support plan. First, you’ll receive access to its UK-based support line, available seven days a week, from 8am–8pm, which should help you out with your broadband problems should you run aground. It’s reassuring to have this safety net, but as TalkTalk offers no guarantees for fault repair, it’s difficult to gauge how good it is.

Seeing that prevention is better than cure, TalkTalk also supplies all its business broadband customers with its network-level security software WorkSafe. This protects all devices supported from your broadband connection. It can manage the content that’s being viewed from the account and block harmful websites that might be infected with viruses. You can also manage your settings online, so you can always keep on top of it.

Extras

Rating

4

The main selling point for this package is the inclusion of unlimited calls to UK landlines and mobiles, which is perfect for most small businesses that communicate over the phone as well as over email. All numbers that begin with 01, 02, 03, 0845 and 0870 are free, and calls to UK mobiles are unlimited based upon typical business use, which is defined as no more than 25 per cent of the calls measured on your bill (by call duration).

Other than calls, you also get up to four static IPs on request, which is perfect if you were planning on setting up your own email server or website, free new line installation if you need one, free business call features, including call waiting and call forwarding, and free premises moves if you plan on changing offices. For £5 a month, you can also bolster your call plan to include a range of additional call features and an International Calls Boost, which gives you 500 minutes to top international destinations.

Value for money

Rating

4

This isn’t the cheapest business package available from TalkTalk broadband, but it does offer pretty good value for money. There are no set-up costs as the package includes free line installation, a free router (subject to a £5 delivery charge), and free calls. Your monthly payments include £21.95 for the package and £15.50 for line rental and then any additional services you want on your call plan.

This package is available on a 12-month contract, so it’s fairly flexible, and can be upgraded to a fibre optic line where it’s available, although this will send your bill spiralling upwards. This is a good value package and worth serious consideration if you are looking for unlimited broadband and free UK calls.

Equipment & installation

You receive the Huawei HG533 wireless router free with this package but for a £5 delivery fee. This is not the best router on the market, but should be sufficient to support the speed this package provides. It uses a 2x2 antenna array that means the signal will not travel as far as other routers. It does have four Ethernet ports, however, so you can wire your computers in the old-fashioned way, meaning you don’t have to rely on the WiFi signal.

If you were thinking about upgrading your service to fibre optic broadband, you’ll probably want to upgrade your router at the same time as this model might not be up to the task of delivering a fast signal. Installation is free with this package, even if you need a new line installed, and you can arrange a good time for an engineer to call when you place your order.

Overall Rating

3.4

This is a well-priced package that offers a decent amount of extras, unlimited broadband and free calls. It falls down a bit on speed and on the quality of the router, but if you need something simple with free technical support that is not too expensive, then this might be right for you.
