TalkTalk Simply Business broadband review

Talktalk’s Simply Business broadband is cheap, flexible and well-supported. It might be even be ideal for small businesses that don’t rely too heavily on an internet connection. There are, however, some caveats that come with such a low price tag.

With a limited call plan, only one static IP and a mediocre router, it could be worth opting for the more expensive Complete Business broadband package, or taking your custom elsewhere.

Cable.co.uk overall rating
3.2

This is a good package if you’re looking for something cheap and easy to use. Its slow speed, sub-par router and lack of a call package hold it back, but a refreshing lack of hidden charges, 12-month contract and good customer support could make it ideal for light users.

Speed & usage

Rating

2

This package comes with a standard broadband speed of up to 17Mbps, which isn’t particularly fast, but would allow a handful of people to accomplish simple tasks like sending emails, browsing the internet and downloading small files. You’re going to run aground when you want to do anything more complex, such as downloading large files, using a VoIP service or streaming any content. It also comes with a 1Mb upload speed, which is not really worth boasting about, and will slow down any large uploads to a crawl.

The good news, however, is that there is no data cap to be concerned with so, while your connection might not be the fastest in the world, you won’t run into any download limits. Ultimately, whether this speed will be sufficient for you depends on how much of your company is web-dependent and how many people you need it to support.

Technical support

Rating

4

Making sure you’re well supported is important if your business depends on your internet connection. This package comes with WorkSafe, which protects your network from viruses and also controls access to certain sites for your employees. Essentially, this will allow you to keep track of what employees are viewing. This service won’t slow your service down, and is all controlled through a master account. There is no limit to how many users or devices you can filter, which is great for expanding businesses.

More importantly TalkTalk offers 24/7 UK-based technical support so you can call it up if things come a little unstuck at your end. Having both of these options is a great advantage, bringing peace of mind to the workplace.

Extras

Rating

3

There is a handful of extras connected to this package. Upon request, you can receive one free static IP address, which is great if you want to run a web or email server. You will not automatically receive it, but can order one when you buy your package. If you want, you can pay an additional £5 a month and boost this to four static IPs.

There are also some call features on your package that you might be able to make good use of, including the £5 International Calls plan, which gives you 500 minutes to international destinations, and the Mobile 500 Builder, which gives you 500 anytime minutes to any UK mobile. You also get a new line installed for free if you need it and a free wireless router to keep all your devices connected.

Value for money

Rating

4

This is the cheapest business broadband package from TalkTalk. It costs £21.95 and comes on a 12-month contract. You also need to pay a £15.50 line rental charge, and that’s it. If that’s all you need, and you factor in all the free support and the free router you get, then yes, this is a great value broadband package. If you need a bit more speed and a few more features then you’ll have to look elsewhere.

TalkTalk offers a number of boosts that will bolster the call plan and the number static IPs you can have, but by the time you’ve added a couple of these, you’ve lost all value attached to the package, and would be better off going for TalkTalk’s Complete Business broadband. This package comes with everything the Simply package has but with unlimited UK landline and mobile calls, four static IPs and a range of other features.

Equipment & installation

Rating

3

This package comes with the Huawei HG533 wireless router, which has a £4.99 delivery charge. The router uses a 2x2 antenna array with four 10/100 Ethernet ports, meaning the signal is not as strong and will not travel as far as other routers. As this package will not reach past the standard broadband speed, there isn’t a huge amount to worry about, but if you wanted to upgrade to a faster fibre optic package, you may also want to upgrade your router, as the HG533 might struggle to supply you with the faster signal.

As well as receiving the router free of charge, you’ll also receive line installation free, which is a great little addition. You should be able to find out whether an engineer needs to come to your property when you order your package. One thing to note, there may be a charge attached to moving your package if you move premises, a service which is free is you opt for the more expensive Complete Business package.

TalkTalk Router

Overall Rating

3.2

This is a rudimental business broadband package that would be suitable for a small business with light Internet usage. It’s not particularly fast, it doesn’t come with many extras and the supplied router isn’t of a high quality, but it’s all rather cheap and it comes with good technical support. If cheap and user-friendly is what you’re looking for – this might be for you.
