TalkTalk Simply Business Superpowered Fibre review

TalkTalk is the third largest broadband provider in the country and a popular choice for businesses looking for low-cost telecoms. TalkTalk Simply Business Superpowered Fibre is one of the cheapest business fibre services around and provides a speedy connection up to 76Mbps, ideal for a small- to mid-sized business.

The budget-friendly package is short on the extra features you might expect from a business fibre service, but there are some basic provisions including technical support and a static IP address. So is it the right choice for your business or should you look elsewhere? We review the details to help you decide.

Cable.co.uk overall rating

If you’re looking for cheap, fast and unlimited business broadband, this is it. The package features comprehensive technical support and a static IP address, but no call plan. As a result, the costs will quickly creep up if your business relies on outbound calls.

Speed & usage

TalkTalk shares BT’s fibre optic infrastructure, and offers up to 76Mbps downloads and 20Mbps uploads. This level of speed is ideal for a busy office that spends a lot of time online and regularly downloads and uploads files on several devices simultaneously. However, if your business is growing, be aware that the speed could start to slow down as you connect more computers and share the bandwidth across more data-heavy activities.

So that’s the theory but how do the speeds fare in practice? Unfortunately, industry regulator Ofcom hasn’t published any recent data on TalkTalk’s real-time fibre speeds so we’re a little in the dark about how the service performs in reality. However, what we do know is that the package includes totally unlimited usage so there’s no worry about hitting a limit or incurring extra charges or penalties if your staff are always online.

Technical support

Technical support is one of the key advantages of opting for business broadband over a residential service, even if you’re a sole trader working from your kitchen table. If being offline for any amount of time can affect your brand’s reputation or finances, it pays to upgrade to a provider like TalkTalk that offers comprehensive support. This fibre service includes 24/7 UK-based technical support so you have experts on hand if you hit any problems. TalkTalk’s WorkSafe software comes as standard with this business package too, to protect all devices on your network from viruses, security threats and other internet nasties. It also allows you to monitor what sites your employees are visiting and designate some as out-of-bounds, which can easily be managed from your TalkTalk online account.

This service is pretty low on extra features. The main omission is a call package, so you’ll just pay for each call you make or pay extra for a call plan, rather than having a bundle of inclusive minutes. This is fine if you don’t rely on a business phone line, but the charges could stack up if you do. And although you don’t get a call package, you still have to pay line rental at an additional £14.50 per month.

One good feature is a free static IP address on request, which allows you to run a web or email server, and you can get up to four additional static IPs for £5 per month. If this plan feels a little too basic, TalkTalk’s Complete Business fibre plan might be a better fit, with unlimited landline and mobile minutes and four IPs included as standard.

Value for money

If price and speed are your key concerns, this package is great way to get unlimited fibre broadband without a prohibitive upfront or monthly cost. At the time of writing, this package is the cheapest fibre broadband service for business on the market and TalkTalk proudly advertises that it is substantially cheaper than BT. While this is undeniable, BT includes 500 monthly landline minutes and unlimited public Wi-Fi as standard so it’s not a completely fair comparison.

The low price of TalkTalk’s basic fibre business package comes at the cost of a call plan or extra features, and we can’t ignore the provider’s bad customer service reputation as well. Consumers and businesses alike are forthcoming with negative experiences of TalkTalk, from installation delays to poor communication, so it’s worth doing your own research to decide if you’re happy to commit to a 24-month contract.

Equipment & installation

The package includes a free high-tech wireless hub called the TalkTalk Super Router. It is specifically designed for fibre broadband and TalkTalk claims it is up to three times faster than most common routers, with a maximum speed capacity of 1.3Gbps. This also makes it future-proof should faster speeds become available at some stage. It has extensive Wi-Fi coverage and transmits on two frequencies at the same time, which work together to provide the best speed and widest coverage for any connected device.

There is just a small delivery charge of £4.99 for the router, and installation is free, which is a big help for small businesses where cash flow may be restricted. However, if you move premises, you’re likely to be charged a fee, unlike the Complete Business package, which offers a free move service if you need it. If you’re switching from another provider, TalkTalk says “you should experience little or no downtime during the switchover” and if you do go offline, it shouldn't be for more than a couple of hours on the day of the switchover.

Overall Rating

Low price and unlimited usage are the major perks of this fibre broadband package, and the 76Mbps optimum speed and 24/7 technical help will ensure your business runs smoothly online. However, TalkTalk was one of the most complained-about broadband providers in Ofcom’s latest industry report. Although we don’t have specific data for business broadband, it’s worth bearing in mind that you get what you pay for with all TalkTalk services.
