TalkTalk Faster Fibre 76Mbps review

Thursday, November 5th 2015

TalkTalk Faster Fibre up to 76Mb is one of the cheapest fibre packages on the market, and the most expensive of the provider's broadband deals. You can take it with a phone line and call plan, or combine it with one of TalkTalk’s TV packages as well.

Sound like the perfect fibre package? The fast download speed and unlimited usage allowance seem very appealing, but is there anything else worth knowing about before you decide? We've uncovered the details.

Cable.co.uk overall rating

TalkTalk’s Faster Fibre 76Mb offers an impressive speed with an attractive price tag. It’s great for streaming movies, downloading music and online gaming. If you opt for the broadband-only plan, you won’t get inclusive calls. There is an option to add one but it will only add to your costs.

Speed & usage

Rating

4

This TalkTalk service comes with an advertised download speed of up to 76Mbps; that’s more than enough to stream ten high definition movies – all at the same time. You could also download the latest music album in four seconds and an online game in over an hour. With this level of speed you’ll be able to browse, download and stream without any hassle. Keep in mind that you will rarely receive the exact advertised speed, as it all depends on the connection in your area. But a slight drop in speed shouldn’t make a huge difference. If you type your postcode into the tool on the TalkTalk website, it will give you the estimated speed available in your area.

The upload speed of up to 19Mbps is the best you can get. You can easily upload photos on social networks in seconds. It’s ideal for gaming and file sharing too.

All TalkTalk fibre optic broadband plans come with truly unlimited usage, so your fun isn’t restricted. You can download as much as you like, without worrying about any extra charges. Plus, there’s no traffic management policy to slow down your online activity. Although TalkTalk won’t actively slow you down, online congestion at peak times may cause disruption to your connection – but it’s nothing to really worry about.

Call plan

Rating

2

TalkTalk's Faster Fibre 76Mb doesn’t include a call plan, but line rental is now included in the advertised price. You will, however, get free calls to other TalkTalk customers. For all other calls there is a £20 per month call limit. If you go over the capped amount, you’ll be barred from making outgoing calls, although you’ll still be able to make emergency calls.

If you think you’ll be using your landline a lot, there is the option to add on an anytime call package from just £7.50 per month.

Extras

Rating

1

TalkTalk packages are very limited on extras, although you do get free HomeSafe software – a useful parental tool. As well as protecting your home devices from harmful threats and viruses, you can also block inappropriate websites as well as individual sites of your choice. You can also block websites for a certain time period with the Homework Time function. This is a useful feature that prevents kids from getting distracted during homework time. It works on all devices that are connected to the home broadband network. For enhanced protection you can add on SuperSafe Boost. For just £2 a month extra you can protect up to eight devices.

TalkTalk is known for offering well-priced broadband deals, and it doesn’t disappoint with Faster Fibre 76Mb. Be aware that if you are an existing customer wishing to upgrade, you’ll be tied to a 24-month contract. If you decide to cancel your services before the minimum term is up, you will be charged.

Although the TalkTalk deals have an attractive monthly rate, there are other costs to consider. Broadband packages come without calls as standard, so if you intend to use your landline you will either have to add on a call plan or pay as you go, which will bump up your monthly cost. If you are likely to use your home phone frequently, it may be worth shopping around, as you may find a better deal elsewhere.

TalkTalk’s Fibre 76Mb comes with a free 802.11ac router, although there’s a £0 delivery charge. It’s a sleek router that gives you fast and reliable internet coverage. It connects devices up to three times faster and offers a stronger and more stable internet connection. Plus, the simultaneous dual-band feature allows the signal to travel to places in your house that couldn’t get signal before. Whether you are streaming a movie in the garden or browsing for a recipe in the kitchen, you’ll get a consistent signal without any disruption. The router is easy to set up – all you need to do is plug it in and you are good to go.

Installation is free for any new customers just wanting fibre broadband, however existing customers wanting to upgrade will have to pay £30. Equally, if you want to combine the fibre service with the Essentials TV package, you will have to pay for connection, but if you choose the premium TV package – Plus TV – installation costs are waived.

Overall Rating

If you are looking to speed up your broadband without any major expense, then this may be ideal. With unlimited usage and an impressive speed, you’ll be able to download as much as you like in no time at all. On the downside, customers who go for the broadband-only deal won’t get any inclusive calls, and although there are options to add a call plan, this will push up the monthly cost.
