Virgin Vivid 200 broadband review

Wednesday, November 4th 2015

If you’re looking for a speedy broadband package, chances are you’ve come across Virgin Media’s three fibre optic broadband services before. The middle child in this superfast trio now offers speeds of up to 200Mb and we've taken a look to find out if it’s worth your hard-earned money.

We’ve looked at the detail of the package to determine who it is suitable for, what it will enable you to do, and whether it’s any good or not.

Cable.co.uk overall rating
4

This package comes with a fast fibre speed that should support the majority of households with high internet usage. It also comes with the option of having a landline or not. The 200Mb fibre speed is perfect for families who enjoy most of their entertainment over the internet.

Speed & usage

Rating

5

The top speed advertised by any other broadband provider is up to 76Mb, so 200Mb puts this package ahead of the competition. Ofcom findings suggest that, in practice, Virgin’s download speed performs rather well.

You’re likely to find that Virgin’s Vivid 200 package offers more than enough clout to support common web-based activity and multiple users without much of a slow down. It’s ideal for a household that spends a considerable amount of time online, and will support plenty of downloading and streaming on a number of devices.

Call plan

Rating

5

One of the major draws of any Virgin Media fibre optic package is that it is available with or without a call plan, however, the price difference between choosing to have a landline or not is minimal – and in fact broadband only is marginally more expensive than broadband and phone.

If you do want the Vivid 200 package with a call plan, you’ll receive unlimited weekend calls to UK landlines, 0870 numbers and Virgin mobile numbers. If you’re a bit of a chatterbox, this can be upgraded to the Talk Evenings and Weekends, Talk Unlimited or the Talk Unlimited Extra plan for additional inclusive calls. There are also other features you can add to your plan, such as Talk Mobile or Talk International, which respectively reduce the cost of calling mobiles on other networks and overseas numbers.

Extras

Rating

3

We all love to get a little bit extra from our providers, so keeping an eye on which freebies you’re going to get might make the difference between choosing a package or not. As a Virgin customer, you’ll receive 24-hour technical help for your connection, a Super Hub and four free apps, including Virgin Media Mail, Virgin Media Toolbar, PC Healthcheck and a security app that keeps up to five devices protected from viruses, malware and other harmful software.

The security app, snappily named F-Secure SAFE, is the headline news here and is free for the first year but costs £79.99 per annum thereafter. The software has won an award in the past and, as Virgin explains, ranks consistently highly in independent security product tests.

Customers also get access to free public wi-fi on the London Underground, although it only works in stations and not on the trains themselves, so it’s perfect for those who like hanging around underground stations, but not those actually on the trains, or anywhere else in the UK for that matter. This pales into insignificance when compared to the extensive public wi-fi networks offered by BT and Sky.

The high-speed fibre deals Virgin offers are extremely well priced when compared to competitive offers from rival companies. If you want an anytime calls package then the price will rise slightly.

Virgin adds even more value to its package with the range of extras, support and tech thrown in at no extra cost. If you want to compare broadband from the rest of the Virgin fibre broadband range, the table below shows how the Vivid 200 package bears up to the other speeds offered by the provider.

As with every Virgin Media broadband deal, customers will be given the Hub 3.0 with the package, which will allow you to connect all your wi-fi enabled devices to the internet. The Hub 3.0 is noted as one of the better wireless routers on the market and was recommended by PC Pro magazine for its solid performance and dual band wi-fi.

All wireless routers and adapters come with two years’ warranty, so if it breaks in that time, you’ll get a new one sent to you. After the two years are up you’ll still get free servicing and repairs as long as you’re still with the company, so you’ll be well supported.

If you’re looking for speed then you’ll find it in this Vivid 200 fibre broadband plan. The main draw here is that you can have the second fastest fibre broadband connection in the UK without having to pay for line rental, which is a huge bonus for those who spend more of their time tapping on a keyboard than chatting on the phone.

The speed provided by Virgin Media should be enough to keep even the most demanding household happy, and the support, extras and tech that come as part of any Virgin Media package make the not insignificant price tag appear better value for money.
