Virgin Media Vivid 100 Broadband review

Friday, July 15th 2016

Hard to believe that entry-level meant 1Mb just a few short years ago. Virgin’s 100Mb service is the fastest entry-level broadband deal on the market, having recently been upped from 50Mb. You get unlimited downloads and useful extra features for an affordable price, and Virgin delivers good customer service to boot.

It sounds great on paper but does it deliver? Here's our take on every single aspect of the service, getting under its skin and demystifying the fine print to help you decide whether this service is really everything it promises to be.

Cable.co.uk overall rating
3.8

Virgin Media’s Vivid 100 service is definitely worth a look. It’s fast and affordable with unlimited downloads, and you can take it with or without a phone line. The drawbacks are limited free public wi-fi (in London Underground stations only) and limited availability to just over half of UK homes and businesses.

Speed & usage

Rating

For an entry-level fibre broadband deal, Virgin Media's Vivid 100 package is hard to beat. The download speed was recently upgraded from 50Mb and customers can now enjoy a faster broadband service for the same price. Ofcom’s latest speed test showed that, on average, customers achieve the download speed advertised.

One drawback is Virgin’s traffic management policy, which means usage isn’t truly unlimited. Virgin has removed traffic management in the direction of downloads, but it still applies to uploads; so gamers, file sharers and anyone else uploading heavily at peak times (evenings and weekends) could find their speed throttled for up to two hours.

Call plan

Rating

5

This broadband plan is available with and without a landline. If you decide to take broadband and calls, you’ll get Talk Weekends included as standard, which features unlimited weekend calls to UK landlines, Virgin Mobile numbers and 0870 numbers. It’s on a par with the standard call plans offered by most other providers, but the inclusive mobile minutes are a useful extra if your family or friends use Virgin Mobile.

If you like to chat more often, you can upgrade to Talk Evenings and Weekends, Talk Unlimited or Talk Unlimited Extra. There’s an international calling option too that cuts the cost of calling landlines and mobiles in other countries to little as 10p per minute, which stacks up extremely well against the competition.

Extras

As a premium provider, we expect some valuable extra features from Virgin Media and it doesn't disappoint. Firstly, you’ll get inclusive Websafe software, which automatically blocks access to sites it believes are either unsuitable for children, fraudulent or contain viruses. For enhanced security, Virgin offers a 12-month free subscription to F-Secure SAFE. This works with up to five devices, includes personalised parental controls and protects against viruses, spyware, hacker attacks and identity theft. After the free trial, it costs £79.99 per year to continue the subscription.

Virgin customers also get free and unlimited wi-fi access on the London Underground. The wi-fi connection is available in ticket halls and platforms at 131 stations, though not in tunnels or between stations. It’s quite useful for London commuters but useless for those of us elsewhere in the country and just doesn’t compare to the extensive public wi-fi networks offered by BT and Sky.

As Virgin’s entry-level fibre broadband plan, it offers a higher speed than any other entry-level fibre plans from rival providers (up to 38Mb), for a very reasonable price. Virgin broadband customers also get discounted rates on Virgin Mobile deals, with SIM-only plans starting from just £6 per month.

This 100Mb service gives a lot for your money and there are often introductory discounts, but expect to pay more than standard broadband plans. The option to take this service with or without a home phone plan sounds good, but it doesn’t actually save you any money. If budget is a key concern, it might be worth taking a look at other providers.

Aside from speed and extra features, reliable customer service supports value for money at Virgin. In Ofcom’s customer satisfaction report for the broadband industry this year, Virgin scored 70% compared to the industry average of 67%.

The latest Virgin Media router is the Hub 3.0 which will be included with your package. It’s a smart, matt-black high-tech router with dual frequency and extra wireless antennae to provide fast and reliable wi-fi connections around your home. Servicing and repairs are included for the life of your Virgin Media contract.

Installation costs £20, but this may vary. However, there is a standard activation charge of £20. Virgin makes it easy to join, particularly if you’re switching from another provider. It will swap you over to the network on the same day you finish with your old supplier because it uses a different line, ensuring minimum disruption. Virgin also offers customers a 14-day cooling-off period as standard in the unlikely event that you will change your mind.

Overall Rating

If you’re looking for an affordable fibre broadband deal, you can’t really go wrong with this Virgin package. It includes unlimited downloads, useful security features and great customer service. But there are some drawbacks to consider, namely traffic management on uploads and limited public wi-fi.

In order to find 100Mb broadband too slow, you would have to be living in a very large household that spends lots of time streaming several different movies at once. For the rest, this is way more than enough. Availability also may be an issue as the network currently covers just over half of the UK.
