Speed & usage

Virgin Media's Big Red Performance is a symmetric service, meaning you get the same speed in both directions. It comes with several speed options, from 30Mbps to 100Mbps. The lowest speed is ideal for small businesses with just a few employees. If you are looking for even more speed, the Big Red Internet package offers speeds of up to 1Gbps, which could comfortably meet the needs of a hundred devices or computers, so is ideal for larger companies. Even 100Mbps bandwidth is ample to carry out several online activities at once, such as file sharing, streaming video content and conducting meetings with clients via Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services such as Skype.

For most businesses, the upload speeds are just as important as the download speeds. With the higher tier speeds, you can send large files in seconds. In addition, the lack of usage limits and traffic management means you can download and upload as much as you need to, whenever you need to.

What you can do with it

‘Actual’ speeds for Virgin Media's Managed Internet Access package are not available from Ofcom.

Technical support

To ensure the efficient running of any business, it’s essential to have reliable technical support. Virgin Media offers support from a team of experts that is available 24 hours a day via a free 0800 number. Once you have logged in your query, Virgin will send out an engineer as soon as possible, meaning you shouldn’t be without a connection for long.

As well as technical support, having the right security is essential. For an additional fee, Virgin Media offers its Managed Firewall service. This service includes anti-virus, anti-spam and web filtering features, and as it is fully managed and monitored by Virgin Media, you don’t need to hire additional staff nor do the job yourself.

Virgin Media doesn’t disappoint when it comes to extras. You can get five free static IP addresses on request. These allow you to run your own business servers, host websites, connect to your computer via remote access and conduct VoIP calls. You can get more static IP addresses at an additional cost.

If you want to add on a call package, it might be worth considering a Virgin ISDN connection, which enables voice, data, internet application and video conferencing transferral at high speed. Alternatively you can choose a standard call package with unlimited national calls.

You can choose to add a mobile SIM to your package from just £10 with 1GB of data to use.

Value for money

When it comes to a leased line package, you will be expected to splash out a lot of money – after all you are getting a dedicated line. Prices start from £325 per month for the 30Mbps package. The cost of any package will depend on a number of variants, including whether you want any phone lines, extra static IP addresses or any additional security support. There are other providers that offer a leased line package at a cheaper price, so you may want to shop around.

There is a one-off installation fee of £49, but this can be covered by the SuperConnected Cities programme if you are situated in one of the participating cities.

Equipment & installation

This package comes with a Cisco router, which allows you to connect several devices and computers to your wi-fi network. If you own a retail store, café, restaurant or salon, your customers can also connect their smartphone or tablets to the network.

Once you have purchased your leased line, an engineer will be sent out to install your line and router. Leased lines channel speed to your property via fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP). This involves the extension of the fibre optic network right into your property, allowing you to get the fastest speed possible. When you are connected you will have access to 24/7 support.
