Speed & usage

Virgin Media offers a download speed of up to 300Mbps, which is ample for small to medium businesses. With this speed you can connect dozens of devices or computers to the wi-fi network. This is ideal for heavy use including file sharing and Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) services such as Skype. However, when it comes to businesses the upload speeds are just as important as download speeds. This package comes with an upload speed of up to 5Mbps. That’s more than enough to upload a 40MB file in a minute.

Bear in mind that it’s very rare that you will get the exact advertised speed. However, Ofcom's assessments of Virgin's speeds have shown that you are likely to get very close to the advertised speed.

It’s worth noting that Virgin Media operates a traffic management policy to ensure consistent speed across the network. However this does not apply to usual business hours between 8am and 6pm on weekdays.

Technical support

Virgin Media doesn’t disappoint when it comes to understanding the need for reliable technical support. The provider offers support from a specialist team that is available 24/7 on a free 0800 number. The team will aim to fix any installation problems within 24 hours. With this prompt service, you shouldn’t be without a connection for long.

When it comes to security and making sure your company is protected from any internet threats and viruses, Virgin Media offers a Managed Firewall product that can be purchased for an additional fee. This will alert you of any threats on your network, give you control over web activity and keep you safe from fraudsters. The best part is that Virgin Media will manage the security so you won’t have to do it yourself.

Virgin Media is generous with extras. The broadband package comes with a phone line that includes free UK and international calls for the first 60 minutes and free mobile calls for the first 10 minutes. In most cases if you are switching you will be able to keep your old numbers. You can get up to five additional land line numbers for free if you order them at same time as your broadband and phone bundle. However, if you decide you want more lines later, there is an additional fee to pay.

You will get one free static IP address upon request, so you can run your own business servers. You can get more static IP addresses at an additional monthly cost.

Value for money

Virgin Media isn’t a budget provider so you can expect its packages to be a little pricey. However, its entry-level package costs £55 per month. Although this may seem steep for some, it offers fairly good value for money. The price includes a call plan, line rental, one static IP address and a wireless Super Hub router. There is a one-off cost for installation to factor in, but that could be a little as £49.

If you don’t need a phone line and want to cut down on costs, you can purchase the broadband-only package for £40 per month. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services such as Skype offer a cheaper alternative to standard landline and mobile calls, especially if you have any clients or offices located overseas.

Equipment & installation

This package comes with the award-winning Super Hub, a combined modem and router. With dual frequency and extra wireless antenna this will provide fast and reliable wi-fi connection in your office.

Once you have placed your order, Virgin Media will send out an engineer to install your broadband and phone. If you are switching from another provider, you may need to ask your current provider for certain details, such as an authorisation code. Virgin Media will clarify this when you make your purchase. Once connected, you will have access to 24/7 support at no extra charge.

Virgin Media offers a competitive business broadband deal. With unlimited usage and no traffic management during business hours, the package is ideal for small companies. If you are lucky enough to be in a city that is part of the SuperConnected Cities programme, then you can also take advantage of the vouchers that offer free installation and lower monthly costs.

Very disappointed to say the least with Virgin Media Business.

I arranged a simple residential to business change over and was told this could be done without the need to dig up pathways or interrupt any neighbours as we live in a block of flats.

The surveyor spent literally 5 mins here and didnt ask any questions just said it could be done from the flat.

The installations guy came and then told me I must either drill holes in neighbours walls or dig up pathways in order to do what we asked.

Guess what the sales guy had put the contract in wrong and had told the surveyor it was a new install.

Whilst here the installations guy put his manager on the phone promising to do it from our flat - never have I heard back from him since.

Furthermore virgin sales and virgin order dept keep blaming each other and even telling lies about why this all went wrong I can proof this too as I kept all the correspondence.

In fact Virgin Ordering Dept are now ignoring me as I seek compensation for 6 weeks of messing around trying to do a simple easy task.

Be very very careful and keep all emails if you choose Virgin as they tell you one thing and dont back up their promises, I will never use them for any business related device as they are unreliable.

6 different people have worked on this order and still no resolution, Virgin simply doesnt enough if you are a small business and if you cancel an order they dont want to hear about why?

I am sure the owners of the companies or sales managers would like to know why?
