Virgin Media Business broadband-only review

This is the cheapest business broadband package available from Virgin Media. It’s broadband-only, so it’s only suitable for those who don’t want a call plan, and has a 50Mbps download speed, so it’s faster than most fibre optic packages.

With access to multiple static IPs, good technical support and a reasonable price tag, this could be the perfect business broadband package for you. We tell you what we think of it in this review.

Cable.co.uk overall rating
3.8

This is a well-priced, broadband-only package that comes with a good wireless router, access to static IPs and decent technical support. It doesn’t cost the earth and is unlimited between office hours – ideal for small businesses that rely more on the internet than on a phone line.

Speed & usage

Rating

Virgin trades on its ability to provide fast, fibre optic broadband to the home, without the need to shell out extra for line rental, and this trend continues with its business broadband package. Virgin Business broadband-only comes with speeds of 50Mbps for downloads and 5Mbps for uploads. These speeds can support a number of computers and devices, and are suitable for most small- to medium-sized businesses with a need for a strong internet connection.

Virgin offers this package with an unlimited amount of data, but there is traffic management in place outside office hours. This means that if you operate between 8am-6pm, you’ll never have to worry about how much you’re downloading, but if you work outside that window, your speed may be throttled for certain activities.

Technical support

Rating

4

Once your business is online with Virgin broadband, you’ll want it to stay that way. Virgin offers free 24/7 support through its 0800 number. This will connect you to its dedicated UK-based business support team, who will endeavour to iron out your problem. Virgin aims to fix all problems concerning cable installation within 24 hours, so you should be back up and running in no time at all.

For an additional fee, you can purchase a managed firewall that will protect your computer against viruses and keep you and your employees safe when you browse online. It will also give you some control over web activity, alert you of any potential online threats and keep you safe from online scams and fraudsters, which should give you some peace of mind.

Extras

Rating

2

There isn’t much in the way of extras included in this package, but the ones you do get are quite useful. If you are planning on setting up a website or hosting your own email client, you will want a static IP address. Virgin offers one static IP free with this package, although you have to ask for it. If you want more than one, you can request them but you will be charged accordingly.

You also receive access to a billing portal so you can keep track of your bills online and a free Super Hub so you can keep all your computers and wireless device connected to the net.

Value for money

Rating

4

This is not the most expensive package in the world primarily because it doesn’t require you to pay line rental. Prices start from £40 a month, which gives you the connection, the Super Hub, one free static IP and 24/7 support. The package is on a relatively long 24-month contract, so make sure you are happy to commit before you put your money down.

Further expense comes from the installation of your services, which costs £49 and any additional static IP addresses you may need. If you want to add a phone line, Virgin Media broadband offers the same package with access to a phone line for an additional £10.

Equipment & installation

Rating

4

Virgin Media will send you a Super Hub as part of the package, so you can keep all your devices connected around the office. The Super Hub is capable of reaching speeds of 100Mbps wirelessly, which is more than this package even allows, and can reach speeds up to 1Gbps via its Ethernet ports. It’s simple to set up and, thanks to its wireless ‘N’ technology, should give you the range and clarity you need to keep your whole building connected.

Installation costs £49. You can buy this package online or give Virgin a ring.

Overall Rating

3.8

This is a fairly straightforward business broadband package for companies that want a fast but simple fibre optic broadband. The main concern here is the lack of a phone line, which limits this deal to those who already pay line rental and have a call plan with another company, or do not need one. It may well be worth considering taking the same package but with a phone line, which, peculiarly, works out £10 cheaper.

If you are a potential Business User, FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR BUSINESS, please read this first.

I ordered a business package many months ago and was offered free installation which Virgin said would be paid for by the Local Authority and I would not have to get involved. The local authority have yet to pay Virgin and the unpaid amount has remained on my account ever since.

Virgin report bad payers to Experian and maybe other credit reference companies. As a result my credit rating hit rock bottom before it was discovered.

Fortunately I pay all my bills on time so it was obvious which company was causing the problem. I am told they would not reply to Experians' request for information and eventually their reports were excluded and my credit rating returned after many months.

Virgin say there is nothing they can do about it and suggested I call the local authority to encourage them to pay Virgin. WHAT AN ABSOLUTE DISGRACE. The broadband is good if you have a business left to use it.

The sad thing is that most local authorities are strapped for cash so I can imagine they are all in the same position as South Ribble holding onto their money. There must be hundreds of people in the same position as me throughout the country.

My advice would be to go to one of the other big players and save your business.
