Virgin Mobile offers a range of deals for your smartphone or tablet. If you’re happy with your existing handset, there are 4G SIM-only and pay-as-you-go deals available, or if you want a new phone, there are pay monthly contracts. There are also options for mobile broadband.

Some of the best deals are reserved for Virgin Media customers, including the unlimited data SIM. Furthermore, there are several hidden costs and the price you pay may increase mid-contract. Here’s everything you need to know…

About Virgin Mobile

Virgin Mobile was the world’s first MVNO (mobile virtual network operator). Instead of operating its own network, an MVNO uses another provider to carry its calls, texts, and data. For Virgin Mobile, this is EE. Because of this, when you’re using Virgin Mobile, you might see your phone displaying EE, T-Mobile, or Orange (both T-Mobile and Orange are owned by EE).

Payment options

If you’re happy with your current handset, you can choose from either a SIM-only or Virgin Mobile pay-as-you-go plan. Both work with your existing smartphone (if they don’t, your handset may need to be unlocked).

On a Virgin Mobile SIM-only deal, you pay a fixed monthly fee for a set amount of minutes, texts, and data. They come on both 30-day and 12-month contracts. On a pay-as-you-go SIM, you just add credit as and when required.

For a new smartphone, choose a Virgin Mobile pay monthly contract

There is a wide selection of modern smartphones available on pay monthly Virgin Mobile contracts. These contracts last 24 months. If you choose one of Virgin’s ‘freestyle’ smartphones, you won’t be stuck with the same tariff for two years. Instead, you can change your tariff around if you need to, making it cheaper one month, and choosing greater allowances the next.

Virgin Mobile offers 3G and 4G coverage. Virgin Mobile coverage reaches almost 100% of UK homes and businesses. This coverage map will show if you can get a signal.

EE's average download speed on 4G is 33Mbps and average 3G speed is 7Mbps, so it is not unreasonable to expect similar speeds with Virgin Mobile.

Virgin Mobile plans are light on extras, but there are a few benefits for existing Virgin Media TV and broadband customers. One is the availability of the SIM-only plan that offers unlimited minutes, text and data. Another is the ability to make free calls to other Virgin Mobile users. Existing customers will also pay less per month for their SIM-only plans.

Get free wi-fi with Virgin's WiFi Buddy
