Vodafone reviews

Vodafone was the UK’s first mobile phone network and continues to hold ground with a quarter of the market share. It offers a wide variety of options for different budgets with new phone contracts alongside SIM-only deals and pay-as-you-go plans.

Vodafone launched a 4G network in 2013 to match its rivals with improved broadband mobile speed. The provider adds value to its Red 4G packages with entertainment subscriptions to Spotify, Now TV and Sky Sports Mobile TV, but they don’t come cheap.

About Vodafone

Vodafone’s name comes from voice, data and [ph]one. It has been around since 1982 and is the third largest telecoms provider in the world. Vodafone offers voice, text and data services with a wide range of mobile phones, plus mobile broadband plans for tablets and other wireless devices. Its services are available to buy online, over the phone or in Vodafone stores on the high street.

Plans and payment options

Vodafone offers the full range of mobile phone services to suit different customers and budgets. If you need a new phone, you can buy one outright or on a monthly contract with a bundle of calls, texts and data. Alternatively, you can buy a SIM-only plan on a short or long-term contract to use in a phone you already have, and for those after the ultimate in commitment-free flexibility, there’s Vodafone pay-as-you-go.

Vodafone 3G coverage is widespread and spans 96% of the UK, but there are still pockets of the country with little or no signal. Moving onto 4G – the fourth generation of mobile broadband – and coverage is steadily growing since the launch in 2013. It currently stands at 95%, with plans to reach 98% by the end of the year. You can see what coverage is like in your area using Vodafone’s online coverage checker.

Speed is one of the most important considerations for mobile users who use the internet on their phone. Vodafone performs pretty well on this front, with average download speed of 7Mbps for 3G and 20Mbps for 4G, compared to the industry average of 6Mbps and 33Mbps respectively.

Vodafone is well known for its extra features, which go some way to make up for its higher than average prices.

Entertainment subscription with Red 4G plans

Many of Vodafone’s 4G plans – known as Red 4G – feature free entertainment subscriptions for six or 12 months. You can choose from Now TV, Spotify and Sky Sports Mobile TV, but only on selected plans with minimum 12-month contracts. You’ll need to cancel your subscription the end of the free term to avoid being charged the standard rate for each service.

Freebee Rewardz with pay-as-you-go

Vodafone offers rewards to pay-as-you-go customers each time you top up. When topping up £5 or more, you’ll receive a code that can be redeemed for an instant ‘grab’ reward, like a music download or highstreet discount, or saved as ‘grow’ reward points for higher value items like a new phone, camera or shopping voucher.
