Vodafone Unlimited Standard Broadband 17

Tuesday, November 17th 2015

The communications giant steps into the broadband ring to take on the likes of BT, Virgin Media and TalkTalk. Vodafone’s Unlimited Standard Broadband 17 package is its opening gambit, but does it get a look in, in an already busy marketplace?

We've taken a look at Vodafone's standard broadband package to see what it offers, who could benefit from it and whether it’s any good.

Cable.co.uk overall rating

This is an average package at a reasonable price. We like the smart router and unlimited downloads, but Vodafone’s broadband service is still in its infancy. There are cheaper standard broadband packages out there, or you could look at a move up to Vodafone's Fibre 38 package to get a lot more for your money.

Speed & usage

The bottom rung of Vodafone’s home broadband offerings is pretty similar to most other broadband providers’ bottom rung – it comes with up to 17Mbps download speed and unlimited usage.

A 17Mbps broadband connection is fast enough to support a few people browsing, sending emails and checking in on friends over social media.

It can also support more strenuous internet use, like streaming in high definition and downloading huge videogames, but will struggle to support a number of people using this at the same time.

The good news is that Vodafone’s ADSL broadband is unlimited, so you can download as much as you want without your speed being throttled, or running into a download limit.

Call plan

It would make sense that Vodafone had a decent call plan included (seeing as it started out as a mobile company), but it doesn't. This package comes with a phone line only.

You can upgrade your call plan to evening and weekend calls for £4 per month or to anytime calls for £8 per month, giving you unlimited calls at any time of the day. Vodafone also offers the International 300 add-on, which gives you 300 minutes of calls to various international numbers.

The call plan comes with a free voicemail service, which can store up to 10 messages, but Caller Display comes with a small charge of £1 per month.

You can also add Voicemail Plus, which lets you store 30 messages and record a personalised message, or Call Management features which gives you a number of advanced features, such as Anonymous Caller Reject.

Vodafone is a little thin on the ground when it comes to extras. If you’re particularly concerned about online security you can sign up to F-Secure antivirus software and get the first six months free (the remaining 12 months will set you back £39.99).

Vodafone also offers parental controls, so you can keep sensitive eyes away from some of the internet’s more undesirable content. It will also block sites that are known to contain computer viruses or malware, keeping your private information safe too.

Considering you do not get any kind of inclusive call plan with Vodafone broadband, it is hard to suggest that this package offers great value for money. Several other broadband providers do at least still offer inclusive evening and weekend calls, and for a similar price.

Like all other providers, Vodafone advertises one overall price - there is no separation of broadband and line rental. This means you can clearly see what you will be paying on a month-by-month basis.

If you are just looking for a basic standard broadband package and aren't bothered by lack of inclusive calls, then Vodafone might be a good choice.

The Vodafone router is included in the price of the package but for a small delivery charge. This wireless router lets you connect your phones, laptops, games consoles, and whatever other web-enabled devices you’ve got, to the internet.

The router allows you to prioritise a particular device so it receives the lion’s share of the broadband connection. For example, you can focus your wi-fi connection towards your laptop while you watch Netflix in HD, to make sure it’s a more stable stream.

This is called ‘beamforming’ (which makes it sound like it belongs on the Death Star) and, while it’s possible to do a similar function with other routers with something called ‘port forwarding’, Vodafone has made it more user-friendly with the help of the Vodafone Broadband app.

This free app lets you easily set up your router, prioritise devices so they get a more stable internet connection and set up guest wi-fi access for when auntie pays a visit and still wants to play online bingo.

Installation is free, but there is a charge of £60 if you need a new line installed if you don’t already have an Openreach line.

Vodafone Connect Router

Overall Rating

This standard broadband package comes with parental controls and a few free months worth of F-Secure internet security software, but the highlight is the intelligent Vodafone router. This smart bit of kit could be the answer to at least some of your slow connection issues with its ‘beamforming’ technology.

Ultimately, it’s a truly unlimited standard broadband package with little in the way of extras. If you are already with Vodafone Mobile, it is worth looking at Unlimited Fibre 38 instead, which, for existing Vodafone customers, costs the same per month as this package.
