BT is the UK’s most popular home broadband provider, with 5.7 million customers regularly using the service to get online.

BT home broadband enjoys a higher level of availability than almost any other UK provider. In fact, if you’ve got a BT phone line there's a good chance that you’ll be able to get BT broadband.

Availability issues

Even with a network as extensive as BT’s there are still areas of the UK where broadband isn’t available.

Broadband slows down as it travels across the phone line from your local exchange to your home, and if that distance is too great then the provision of broadband becomes impossible. This is why many people living in isolated rural areas find themselves unable to receive broadband, and are forced to make do with dial up Internet access, or to look to other technologies to get online.

Mobile broadband is being rolled out to new areas all the time so if home broadband isn’t an option you may be able to get online using a dongle.

Guide to checking mobile broadband coverage

The other option is satellite broadband, which uses a dish mounted on or near your home to send and receive broadband from a satellite in orbit above the earth. Satellite broadband is coming of age and there is now a good range of options that enable practically anyone in the UK to get online from even the most remote location. The only downside is the prohibitively high cost of equipment and subscription fees that price the technology out of most people’s budgets.
