Sky Original Bundle review

Thursday, June 26th 2014

If you want to sample Sky TV but keep your monthly fee low, the Original Bundle could be the package for you. Sky’s lowest-priced collection includes a range of subscription, free-to-air and HD channels.

You can personalise it, get it installed for free, get an app to watch it on the move, and save up to a week’s worth of telly with it. All from £16.13. Sound interesting?

What you get

The Original Bundle features some of Sky’s most popular programming in the Sky Entertainment pack. You get a Sky+ HD box to record shows and the Sky Go app to stream your favourite programmes on mobile devices while you are out and about. You’ll need Wi-Fi access for this, or you can upgrade to Sky Go Extra (£5 per month) to download content to enjoy later without an internet connection. Check out the full feature line-up and channel list below.

What you don’t get

As you might expect from Sky’s budget TV package, many of the flagship channels aren’t included in this bundle; most notably, the 11 dedicated Sky Movies channels and the six dedicated Sky Sports channels. But the good news is that you can add these to your package if you want them, or opt for the Sky Movies Bundle or Sky Sports Bundle instead. Those looking for lots of HD content might be disappointed too, as there is a limited selection and you can’t add an HD pack to get more.

Anything termed a Sky 'bundle' includes only TV, but you can add broadband and phone for a full telecoms package if you wish. Sky says it includes Talk Weekends (unlimited weekend calls to UK landlines provided they total an hour or less) and Broadband Lite (2GB maximum data restriction) for ‘free’ with all Sky TV, although this isn’t strictly true since you’ll still need to pay a line rental of £15.40 should you choose to take them.

You can upgrade to unlimited standard broadband from £5 and unlimited fibre from £7.50 per month, plus line rental. You can see the line-up of optional extras below.

Alternatives

If the Original Bundle isn’t quite what you’re after, one of Sky’s other bundles might be a better option. These include the Family, Sports, Movies and Complete bundles. Alternatively, Virgin TV is worth a look, as is Now TV for Sky’s top channels at a cheaper price and without the lengthy contract.

Conclusion

As far as pay TV packages go, the Original Bundle is a great way to get your hands on Sky’s top channels, including the coveted Sky Atlantic for popular shows. You’ll be able to record your favourite shows and whole series with one click on the remote, and also catch up with anything you’ve missed in the last seven days.

The price is reasonable, but if you're looking for movies and sporting action, you'll find it lacking. Also bear in mind that the cost starts to creep up when you add these extras.

I am very upset with sky. My bill started out at £19 pounds an pence. With out getting in touch with me they have increased my bill over the past years. it is now £4671. I can not afford that so I all so will be changing over. You can up grade your sky t v channels but they don't tell you how to down grade. paying £46.71 is taking out off my weekly money leaves me with less than £70pounds to get food and pay my electric gas t.v licence b.t phone etc. so sky you will be loosing a good customer when I leave you

I have recently taken up the entertainment extra for £5 per month extra i thought i was on the original bundle as i do not have or want films or sports. I was surprised to find out because i have documentries i already have to pay extra for this it also allows me music and childrens channels which i do not use. I do not think anyone is able to personlise your sky as there are lots of channels i do not use this includes religion, shopping, international, radio, adult, gaming and standalone. My current contract is due to end 26/05/2014. I will be giving my 31 days notice on 25/04/2014 and going with Virgin who seem to offer more for your money. Very unhappy future ex customer.
