How to watch Sky TV with no satellite dish, no broadband, no line rental and no subscription

Friday, February 9th 2018

Why is it that if you want to watch Sky, it seems like you're forced to take on a whole set of additional liabilities? A lengthy subscription, a phone line with expensive monthly line rental, Sky broadband and an unattractive dish bolted to the side of your beautiful house.

Actually, Sky only makes it appear that way so it can sell you more stuff. You can get Sky TV without any of that if you want. You need to get Now TV.

Sign up to Now TV to get Sky without a satellite dish

Sky's most popular entertainment channels are available for very little without a satellite dish from Now TV, which is owned by Sky. You just need a broadband connection.

You won't get the vast range of channels that you would get if you joined Sky, but you will get the very best. Now TV offers its Entertainment Pass on one-month, three-month, or six-month subscriptions and prices start at £7.99 per month. You have to sign up online and you will be able to watch immediately. There is no long contract – and no satellite dish.

How to watch Sky Sports and Sky Cinema without a satellite dish

Get Sky Sports through the Sky Sports Mobile TV App

Totally separate from Now TV is the Sky Sports Mobile TV App. The app is available on iPhones and some Android smartphones, but isn't available on iPads or other tablets. There are two packages to choose from: Pack 1 costs £4.99 and includes Sky Sports 1 and 2 and Sky Sports HQ, and Pack 2 costs £9.99 and includes Sky Sports 1-5, Sky Sports F1, Sky Sports News and Sky News.

Get Sky Sports and Sky Cinema with BT TV

Join BT TV and you can watch Sky Cinema and Sky Sports without a satellite dish. However, you need to have BT TV with BT Infinity – BT's fibre broadband service. Only Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 are available on BT TV. You can add these at any time by managing your account online. You can add just one channel, or both as a bundle.

You can also get all 11 Sky Cinema channels with BT TV, including Sky Cinema Family and Sky Cinema Disney.

Get Sky Sports and Sky Cinema with TalkTalk TV

TalkTalk TV is another option if you're after Sky Sports and Sky Cinema without a satellite dish. You can add the extra channels either when you sign up, or later, through your online account. All six Sky Sports channels are available with TalkTalk TV. These include Sky Sports 1 to 5, and Sky Sports F1. The Sky Sports channels come on a rolling 30-day contract and can be removed without charge.

TalkTalk also offers all 11 Sky Cinema channels as part of a single bundle. When you add Sky Cinema you can also watch films on demand.

Get Sky Sports and Sky Cinema with Virgin Media TV

Virgin Media has something that the providers mentioned above lack: Sky Sports and Sky Cinema in high definition (HD) – for an extra fee. If you choose Virgin's VIP bundle, both Sky Cinema and Sky Sports in HD are included. Alternatively, you can add all the Sky Sports channels and/or Sky Cinema channels to any other Virgin bundle for a monthly fee.

How to get Sky TV without a phone line

You can watch Sky TV without broadband

Sky's renowned subscription TV service is available without the need of broadband or line rental – and that includes Sky Multiroom. Its satellite platform delivers the majority of its programming, but if you want full access to all that's available, including Sky on demand and Sky Box Sets, a broadband connection – though not necessarily one from Sky – is needed.

  • Sky Entertainment

    • 75+ entertainment channels, 11 HD channels
    • 250+ free-to-air channels
    • Comes with Sky Q 1TB box as standard
    £20 set-up cost See Deal

You will need broadband (and therefore a landline) to watch Sky on demand and Sky Box Sets

Sky's extensive catch up and on demand libraries offer flexible viewing, but are only fully accessible if your Sky set-top box is connected to the internet. But if you have no need for a phone line and absolutely don't want to pay line rental, you can still watch Sky TV.

  • Sky Entertainment + Box Sets + Unlimited Broadband

    • 75+ entertainment channels, 11 HD channels
    • 250+ free-to-air channels
    • Up to 17Mb download speed
    • Truly unlimited monthly usage
    • Pay as you go calls
£29.95 set-up cost includes line rental See Deal

You can't get Sky broadband without a phone line

Sky doesn't offer broadband-only plans. All Sky broadband packages come with a call (home phone) plan, but even if you could get broadband on its own from Sky, you wouldn't be able to avoid the cost of line rental since the connection comes through your landline.

Unlike Virgin Media, which does offer broadband-only deals, Sky doesn't operate on its own network, but rather rents bandwidth from the BT-owned Openreach network, part of which is the phone line coming into your home.

  • Sky Unlimited Broadband

    • Up to 17Mb download speed
    • Truly unlimited monthly usage
    • Pay as you go calls
    Free £50 reward card
£9.95 set-up cost includes line rental See Deal

Virgin Media offers TV and broadband without line rental

Virgin Media's broadband-only packages range from download speeds of 50Mbps up to 300Mb and, as the name suggests, come without a phone line or the associated line rental charges on top. Be sure you specify that at the checkout – Virgin Media tends to put a call package in your basket by default.

  • Virgin Media VIVID 100 Fibre Broadband

    Virgin Media
    • Up to 100Mb download speed
    • Unlimited monthly usage
    • No landline, no line rental

Can I get Sky TV without Sky broadband?

Answer Part 1

Sky TV is available to everyone, whether you have Sky broadband or not, so long as you can have a satellite dish fitted to your property, with a clear view of the southern sky.

Answer Part 2

Just because you can doesn't mean you should. You may have reasons for wanting Sky TV on its own. Perhaps you don't need a home internet connection, maybe Sky broadband isn't available in your area, or you've had the service previously and not been happy with it. But if there is no reason, it's worth considering taking Sky's complementary services alongside a TV package.

Why? Well, it's likely to work out cheaper; it will streamline your household accounts with a single monthly bill and single point of contact to deal with any issues; and you'll get access to what some deem to be Sky TV's best feature: Sky Box Sets and on demand movies. Without broadband, they simply aren't available.

Seven ways to watch Sky TV without a subscription

1. Now TV

Now TV is the online TV streaming service from BSkyB. Rather than a satellite dish, Now TV uses your broadband connection to stream content over the internet instead.

There's no contract and you can buy one-off passes for Entertainment, Kids, Sky Cinema and Sky Sports. Entertainment, Kids and Cinema run on monthly passes, whereas Sky Sports is available for one day or one week at a time.

Many devices are compatible with Now TV, including smartphones, tablets, computers, smart TVs and games consoles. If you don't already have a device, Now TV boxes are available for £19.99 to hook up to your TV to watch your chosen channel pack and make use of catch up TV players and a range of apps.

2. The Sky Sports Mobile TV app

Sports fans can watch Sky Sports live without a subscription on iPhones and selected Android smartphones via the Sky Sports Mobile TV app. There are two contract-free packs to choose from starting at £4.99 per month; pack one gives you Sky Sports 1, 2 and News HQ, while pack two gives all seven channels and Sky News.

The Sky Sports Mobile TV app is free to download from the Apple store and Google Play. Once you've chosen and paid for your package, the app streams Sky Sports over the internet, so you'll need to be connected to wi-fi or have a 3G or 4G signal with a large data allowance since live streaming uses a lot of data.

3. BT TV offers Sky channels as optional extras

BT offers bundles of broadband, home phone and digital TV with a YouView box. Sky Sports 1 or 2 (or both) and Sky Cinema can be added to any one of the three TV plans for an additional monthly cost.

The largest package, BT TV Entertainment Plus, also features a range of Sky entertainment channels, including Comedy Central, Fox, Discovery, E!, History and SyFy, but not Sky Atlantic.

To get Sky Sports and entertainment channels with BT TV, you must take fibre optic broadband with your package, known as BT Infinity. Sky Cinema on the other hand, is available with any combination of BT TV and broadband. Contracts start from 12 months.

4. TalkTalk TV customers can add Sky channels in 'Boosts'

TalkTalk offers similar options to BT: bundles of broadband, home phone and digital TV to which you can add Sky channels.

Subscriptions run for 18 months and customers get a YouView box with the choice of two TV packages, Essentials and Plus. The latter features seven Sky channels including Sky 1 and 2, Sky Living, Sky Arts and Sky Sports News HQ.

The Sky Entertainment Boost (35 channels), Sky Sports Boost (five channels) and Sky Cinema Boost (11 channels) can be added to either package for an extra monthly fee and removed at any time.

The main caveat is that you have to take fibre broadband to get the TV boosts as they are not available with standard speed TalkTalk broadband. Sky Atlantic is not available with TalkTalk TV either.

5. Virgin Media offers Sky TV options with or without broadband

Virgin is probably Sky's biggest rival and offers pretty much everything Sky does when it comes to TV, with one exception: Sky Atlantic.

Unlike BT and TalkTalk, Virgin offers TV-only packages, as well as the option to bundle up with broadband and home phone. Subscriptions range from 12 to 18-months. Most TV plans come with a 500GB TiVo box or you can downgrade or upgrade boxes to suit your budget.

The number of Sky entertainment channels varies between packages. Sky Cinema and Sky Sports can be added to any other bundle or TV-only package for an extra monthly cost. Sky Cinema and Sky Sports run on monthly rolling contracts and can be removed from your package whenever you want.

6. Watch it at a friend's house

If cost is the main barrier to getting Sky TV for Sky Sports or the leading entertainment of Sky Atlantic, you could always ask around your friends to see if anyone has it and wangle an invite to watch an important show or event.

Make up for freeloading with some snacks and drinks or perhaps by splitting the cost of a Now TV pass if you're both stuck for a way to watch the best of Sky TV.

7. Catch Sky Sports at a local pub

If you're solely after Sky Sports coverage, you could always find a local pub broadcasting the events you want to watch. Matchpoint.co.uk helps locate pubs with licenses to show Sky Sports where you live, with the cost of admission only equating to a pint or two.
