Unlike most broadband providers, who share the Openreach network, Virgin Media use their own cables to give you the fastest widely available internet connection in the UK - with speeds up to 7x faster than the likes of Sky and BT.
This page will tell you everything you need to know about signing up for a super-speedy broadband deal with Virgin Media; what’s on offer, whether the provider is right for you, and what to expect in terms of equipment, installation, costs, customer service, and more.
We’ll also show you the best Virgin Media broadband deals currently available on the UK market.
Can I get Virgin Media broadband in my area?

Why choose Virgin Media broadband?
As well as providing the fastest broadband speeds in the UK, (over 1Gbps in some areas), Virgin Media has many other selling points.
For a start, because the brand operates using their own network, no landline phone connection is required, so you’ll never have to face the cost and hassle of having one installed.
Virgin Media also offers an impressive range of TV channels that can be added to your broadband deal, and with the brand’s 14-day money-back guarantee, you have a cooling off period if you get cold feet about your hot new deal.
With Virgin Media, you’ll also enjoy award-winning customer service and can take advantage of exclusive customer-only perks like access to over 20 million free worldwide WiFi hotspots.
As with any broadband provider, there are downsides to choosing a Virgin Media deal. For a start, the provider can only provide its internet service to around 60-65% of UK households, so there’s a chance it won’t be available where you live. Our broadband availability checker can help you find out if you’re one of the lucky ones who can access Virgin Media’s fantastic broadband speeds.
While most brands charge a penalty for ending your broadband contract early, Virgin media may also do this if you want to move your existing deal to a new house. Currently, you’ll need to pay off your remaining contract if you’re moving to an area where Virgin Media broadband isn’t available.
If you think you might need to move house within your Virgin Media broadband contract term, it’s best to avoid a deal with the provider, unless you’re 100% sure you can get the same service at your new address.

How much is Virgin Media broadband?
With the fastest widely available average download speeds on the UK market, Virgin Media is naturally one of the pricier broadband providers. Virgin broadband deals start from £26 per month.
While monthly rates are above average, the brand does have regular sales and special offers, so it’s worth checking regularly to grab a bargain.
The majority of Virgin Media’s broadband deals come with an upfront £35 set-up fee, but occasionally you'll find a limited time offer when the fees are waived across the full range of packages – so again, do keep an eye out.
How long are Virgin Media contracts?
Virgin Media has a standard contract term of 18 months, and doesn’t offer short-term broadband contracts on a rolling, month to month basis. And, as with most other providers, if you want to leave your contract early you will be charged an exit fee.
What packages does Virgin Media offer?
Virgin Media currently offers three key broadband, TV and landline phone packages, all of which are available on 18 month contracts. There are several vaiations on offer, which bundle in things like sports or movie channels, but we've listed the main ones below.
All bundles come with the option to personalise, so you can upgrade to faster broadband, add more TV channels or include additional call features (charges will apply).
Virgin’s bundles also come with the brand’s Intelligent WiFi, which helps to deliver the most reliable signal by adapting to how many devices and people are online and where you are in your home. As we've mentioned, there’s also a 14-day money back guarantee, so if you’re unhappy with any part of the service or provision during this period, simply cancel your contract and you’ll be reimbursed what you’ve paid.
Virgin Big Bundle
Virgin Media’s ‘Big Bundle’ includes unlimited M50 fibre broadband with an average download speed of 54Mbps. Occasionally Virgin offer this with a speed boost up to M100, so you may want to look out for that. A TV and phone package are part of the deal and you’ll get the Hub 3 router and a TV 360 set-top box when you sign up. The phone add-on is the Talk Weekends deal and will allow you to make free calls to landlines during the weekend.

You’ll get the same things as the Big Bundle package offers, as well as considerably more channels. BT Sports, ESPN, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Comedy Central to name a few. Something for the whole family.
With faster broadband speeds than the Big Bundle, customers choose to pay a little extra for the Bigger Bundle due to the upgrade of the TV element. Read our Bigger Bundle review to learn more about the offer.

What speed do I need for streaming?
As a general rule, the larger your household and the more devices in use at the same time (sharing your internet connection) the faster broadband speed you’ll need when streaming content.
If you enjoy streaming TV, film and music via the internet, you’ll typically need a fibre broadband connection rather than standard / ADSL internet provision, with a minimum speed of around 35Mpbs.
As Virgin Media’s fibre broadband speeds start at 54Mbps (for the only occasionally available M50), you should be able to easily enjoy streaming content with any of the brand’s fibre packages.
If you regularly stream content in HD, download large files or enjoy online gaming, you’re likely to need a mid-range broadband connection when it comes to speed, so opt for Virgin’s M100 connection or above.
For extra-large, busy households where everyone wants to stream content at the same time, your safest option might be Virgin’s M200 fibre broadband deal (or faster).
The right broadband speed to select depends on the number of people you live with and what you all enjoy doing online. Our guide to broadband speed will help if you’re not sure what speed your household needs.
What speed do I need for gaming?
Virgin Media is an online gamer’s dream, as all of the brand’s fibre broadband packages pack enough power to ensure uninterrupted gaming pleasure for multiple users.
Xbox Live recommends an optimum speed of just 3Mbps for online gaming, which is lower than most average download speeds for standard / ADSL broadband in the UK.
We’d suggest a much higher internet speed of at least 30Mbps to enjoy online gaming at its best, especially if you want to download digital games at a reasonable speed (some are over 100GB). Faster connections with lower latency also reduce the risk of lag interfering with your gaming experience.
Any of Virgin’s fibre broadband deals will do the job for online gamers, but we’d suggest signing up for their M100 broadband speed or above.
If you need more information about choosing the right broadband speed for your needs, our broadband speed guide can help.
Installing Virgin Media broadband and what to expect
As Virgin Media operates on their own network, rather than using the Openreach network shared by most other UK broadband providers, new customers will need to book a visit from one of the brand’s engineers to install the cable required to get everything up and running. A time and date for this should be set when you place your order - usually within 14 days. Once at your home, the engineer will take up to two hours to complete the installation.
If your home has previously had Virgin Media broadband installed, however, you can take advantage of the brand’s QuickStart self-install process, which should get your broadband up and running in a few simple steps. QuickStart packs are usually sent out within three working days for the UK mainland and four working days for Northern Ireland.
However you connect, it’s likely that your Virgin Media broadband or combined TV, phone and broadband package will include a standard, installation fee of £35, which is added to your first bill. However, Virgin Media has been known to have promotional offers where they waive their fees entirely, so if you do see one, be sure to grab it!
For further information, check out our broadband installation guide.
What router will I get?
With most Virgin Media fibre broadband packages, a Virgin Media Hub 3 router is included as standard. This has a range of plus points, including:
- Next generation WiFi: Using the latest wireless standard (802.11ac).
- Smart channel selection: Automatically connects your devices to the fastest available WiFi channel and frequency.
- Intelligent WiFi technology: Checking your network connection to ensure WiFi is shared fairly between devices and boosting the signal to the devices located further away from the router.
- Dual band: Using both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands (like many modern routers).
- Four gigabit ethernet ports: Allowing you to use a wired connection for up to four devices at the same time.
- Five antennae: Few than some of its competitors, so WiFi coverage may not be evenly distributed throughout your home.
While Virgin’s Hub 3 router is perfectly fit for purpose, it has received some criticism from users and reviewers which centres around speed and WiFi range. Although the brand offers the fastest widely available broadband speeds in the UK, some believe that the Hub 3 is not fully equipped to pass these on to the customer.
The Hub 3’s WiFi connection can be relatively slow, wasting some of the fast internet connection being delivered by Virgin to your home. To receive the full benefit from Virgin’s fastest packages, we recommend connecting your Hub 3 router to your device by an ethernet cable (you can do this for up to four devices at the same time).
What else is available from Virgin Media?
Along with their superfast broadband speeds, Virgin Media has a range of other attractions:
Network WiFi spots: Virgin Media customers can use the brand’s ‘Connect’ app to gain free access to 20 million WiFi hotspots in the UK and abroad, including the USA. Once downloaded, the app will automatically remember you and connect you to a speedy WiFi connection when you’re in range of a hotspot - no need to enter a password or username.
Web Safe parental control: With ‘Child Safe’, part of Virgin Media’s ‘Web Safe’ service, customers can use parental controls to manage the content their child or teenager can view online. It’s a simple process to set up:
- Log in to ‘My Virgin Media’
- Go to ‘My Apps’
- Select ‘Parental Controls’ in Virgin Media Web Safe
- Click on ‘Manage Web Safe’
- Switch on ‘Child Safe’
- Adjust the settings according to the level of protection you want.
- Click ‘Apply’
Virgin Media Internet Security: Powered by F-secure SAFE and available free for three months to full-fibre broadband and TV customers, Virgin media’s internet security add on offers a range of different online protections including parental controls and automatic virus, malware, ransomware and spyware protection – all on unlimited devices. There are also safety features to protect users while online banking, shopping and surfing the internet. Once the trial period is up, the service costs £3 per month.
Wifi London Underground: It couldn’t be easier for Virgin Media customers to take advantage of free WiFi on the London Underground. All you have to do is visit a station with Virgin WiFi, turn on your phone’s WiFi and open the browser. You’ll be greeted with the Virgin Media Portal page where you can enter your username and password for instant access.
Free servicing and repair: Whether there’s a problem with your broadband, TV or home phone (or all three) Virgin Media will send an engineer to repair the fault as soon as possible at no cost.
Homeworks: Existing Virgin Media customers can add ‘Homeworks’ to their broadband deal for £9.99 a month, providing 24/7 IT support with a next-day technician service if a problem can’t be solved over the phone. That's a level of service usually only found with packages designed for business use.
