How to compare and buy Sky HD

Watching Sky TV in HD adds extra clarity to your TV experience. Its picture quality is five times sharper than standard definition, giving you a more enjoyable experience. Sky+HD is no longer available to buy; it has been replaced by the superior Sky Q system, which also offers high definition clarity.

Availability

Sky is still primarily delivered via satellite and hence is available in the majority of homes in the UK. To see if you are in luck, use our availability checker to find out if you can get Sky TV in your area. Type in your postcode and we will provide you with a list of packages that are available to purchase.

Check the detail

Make sure you familiarise yourself with all the details before making your purchase. The terms and conditions include important information on contract length, notice period, cancellation charges and any hidden costs, so it’s worth taking time to look through them before you commit.

Why choose Sky TV?

A vast array of TV channels, including Sky Atlantic in HD

Sky offers the widest choice of TV channels in the UK. Whatever your taste, there is usually something to keep everyone entertained. You can enjoy top quality drama series on Sky One and Sky Atlantic and keep up to date with the headlines on Sky News. Plus, if you’re a sports fan or movie lover, you can upgrade your package and enjoy access to Sky Sports and Sky Cinema..

Crystal-clear high definition

HD offers five times sharper picture quality and sound than standard definition. Whether you want to be enthralled by the latest blockbuster film, or caught up in the action of a Premier League football match, HD will dramatically enhance your viewing experience.

Great features on the Sky Q box

With the old Sky+HD box no longer available, customers can benefit instead from the Sky Q box, which enables you to pause and rewind live TV, and, with its 1TB of storage, you can also record up to 500 hours of HD TV. That’s enough to record a whole TV series. If you feel that isn’t enough, you can upgrade to a Sky Q 2TB box after you’ve signed up.

The built-in wi-fi means you can connect your Sky Q box to any broadband router and enjoy Sky’s TV on demand services, as well as streaming apps such as BBC iPlayer, the ITV Hub and Channel Four’s All4. Sky Q also comes with voice activation so you don’t even have to faff around with the remote control to find what you want.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • An array of TV channels, including Sky Atlantic
  • Crystal-clear high definition
  • Sky Q box has great features

Cons

  • Add-on services can get expensive
  • A satellite dish has to be installed
  • Broadband is required for TV on demand

Which package is right for me?

Sk no longer offers different bundles in the way it once did. Instead, it offers an entry-level package that is far from basic, to which you can add on extras if you wish. Unfortunately, Sky does still not include HD or UHD channels as standard – you have to pay extra for the privilege. To watch Sky Q and enjoy all the facilities it offers, you will also need a broadband connection.

Sky TV and Netflix with Sky Box Sets

This is Sky’s entry-level TV package. It comes with a basic Netflix subscription as standard, although you can upgrade if you want to watch on more than one TV or other device. You also get access to over 100 channels that aren’t available on Freeview, including Sky Atlantic, as well as Sky Box Sets, which has over 500 TV shows to enjoy at your leisure.

Customise your package

Add HD and/or UHD channels

You can choose to enjoy either just HD or HD and UHD channels for an extra few pounds a month. This will give you access to all channels that are available in HD, including Sky Atlantic, Sky One, Discovery, and more, plus access to Sky Sports in HD, should you decide to bolt that on too. Both the HD-only and UHD and HD add-ons come on a 31-day rolling contract, so if you only wanted it for a limited time to watch a specific sports event in HD, for example, you can then cancel after a month.

Sky Sports

Whether you want to watch the latest Premier League action, Formula 1 or international cricket, Sky Sports is available as an add-on. It comes with 11 dedicated sports channels: Main Event, Premier League, Football, Cricket, Golf, Racing, F1, NFL, Arena, News and Mix. The Sky Sports add-on is only available on an 18-month contract, so be certain you are prepared to commit before adding it on to your base pack.

BT Sport

Customers wanting access to all sport possible will be interested in signing up for BT Sport as well as Sky Sports. This is the most expensive add-on, but it is only on a 31-day rolling contract, so again, if you only want it for a specific event, you can easily cancel your subscription. BT Sport provides access to the UEFA Champions League and much more, and comes with four channels and full HD as standard.

Sky Cinema

Film lovers can add Sky Cinema to their base package for just a tenner a month. As well as hundreds of movies, from classics to recent Hollywood blockbusters, customers can also pay a little extra to view other movies via Sky Store rentals – although unfortunately Sky no longer offer a discount for Sky Cinema subscribers. It only comes on an 18-month contract however, so you will need to be prepared to commit to the additional cost for the duration of your Sky TV contract.

Multiscreen

If you want to watch Sky TV in more than one room, then you will need to sign up for Multiscreen. This service provides you with one extra Sky Mini box, which not only enables you to watch Sky TV in a second room, but also acts as a wi-fi booster. You can choose to add up to three Mini boxes on top of your main Sky Q box, with an additional fee for each extra Mini box after the first one. Just be aware that you can only stream on two boxes at once however.

Multiscreen customers also get free access to the Sky Go Extra app, so you can stream and download content on up to four devices, such as phones, games consoles and tablets, at the same time.

Sky Kids

Sky Kids comes with eight kids’ channels including Nickelodeon, NickToons, Nick Jr, Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Cartoonito, with over 10,000 episodes available on demand. You also get access to the Sky Kids App, where little ones can watch their favourite shows and also play games safely.

Disney+

To boost your viewing options still further, the Disney+ app is available as an add-on to Sky TV on a rolling 31-day basis. Families can enjoy Disney classics as well as all the Star Wars, Marvel and Pixar films. It also comes with National Geographic, offering a wealth of educational content. The latest addition, Star, shows more mature content, from classic episodes of 24 and Prison Break to new, original shows such as Big Sky and Love, Victor.

What will I need?

A satellite dish

Sky operates through a satellite dish, which is linked to your Sky Q box. If you’re living in a rented property, you have to make sure you get permission from the landlord before the installation takes place. An engineer will then come to install your dish. Make sure someone is at home for the installation process – it shouldn’t take too long to get set up.

A broadband connection

In order to make use of the on demand feature and enjoy watching your favourite box sets and movies, you’ll need broadband. Sky offers four speeds when it comes to broadband, averaging 11Mbps, 36Mbps, 61Mbps, 145Mbps, 500Mbps and 900Mbps. To find out what’s available in your area, enter your postcode in the box at the top of this page and select broadband and TV. This will show you the Sky TV and broadband deals available in your area.

How do I switch?

Decide on the right package

You can choose a Sky TV deal from the table above. By clicking on the package, you’ll get a breakdown of what’s included in the plan. This will give you information on a number of features, including channels and pricing. You can sort the list as you wish, according to monthly cost, contract length or total savings. Once you have made a selection, click on the ‘See Deal’ button, where you’ll be redirected to the provider’s website to purchase your deal.

Cancel with your provider

If you are switching from another provider, you’ll have to let them know that you are leaving. If you cancel your contract before the minimum term expires, you’ll be subject to a termination charge. Normally, you will need to give your provider 30 days’ notice, but read the terms and conditions to check whether this applies.
