Customer service

Plusnet

Plusnet has won a host of plaudits for customer service from various telecoms comparison websites, and has also been named one of several recommended broadband providers by consumer group Which?, rating highly for connection reliability, value for money and customer service.

Sky

Technology and equipment

Plusnet

Plusnet comes with a free self-install Hub One router, which is able to support several devices on one network. It’s a dual band router with two wireless antennas for wi-fi connections (2.4GHz and 5GHz) and four basic Ethernet ports. There’s a charge of £6.99 for postage and packaging.

Sky

Sky broadband packages come with a Sky Hub. It also allows you to connect several devices to the network, wirelessly, thanks to its wi-fi antenna. There are several ports for Ethernet connections on the rear. It also includes power safety features (to save energy when not in use), and it's a smart bit of kit too with a reasonably sturdy build quality.

Extra features

Plusnet

Unlimited broadband and Unlimited Fibre Extra customers get McAfee security for free. Unlimited Fibre customers only get it free for three months, and for £2 per month thereafter. The security software protects all devices used in one household, since the protection take place ‘at source’ rather than on a single computer.

Sky

Sky unlimited broadband customers benefit from free access to public wi-fi at thousands of Cloud hotspots including popular highstreet locations like Pizza Express and Café Nero. Plus, you can keep your kids safe online with the Sky Broadband Shield. It's a parental tool that allows you to filter websites and customise your privacy settings into age categories.

Conclusion

If truly unlimited downloads and free public wi-fi appeal to you, Sky trumps Plusnet.

In addition, if you are considering Sky TV, you are better off taking the whole bundle from Sky, rather than Sky TV with Plusnet broadband and phone. Not only will this save money, you’ll also have one monthly bill and one point of contact if anything goes wrong.
