BT brings fibre optic broadband to Basingstoke

Wednesday, December 16th 2009 by Cable.co.uk

Communications giant BT is introducing fibre optic broadband services in Basingstoke, it has been announced.

Fibre optic broadband is to be introduced across Basingstoke as part of new plans from BT.

The company's Openreach division is set to upgrade the internet network in the town by introducing a range of new cabinets, which will connect around 27,000 homes and businesses to the new super-fast service.

Download speeds of up to 40Mbps – with a guaranteed minimum of 15Mbps – will be available in the area thanks to the work.

Peter Cowen, BT's south-east regional partnership director, said: "Broadband has played a vital part in the success story of the region. Businesses are using it to boost their competitiveness and find new customers, whilst households are benefiting from new entertainment and educational opportunities.

"This fibre to the cabinet roll-out will enhance this and really help Basingstoke grow."

Earlier this month, BT confirmed plans to introduce an advanced communications network at the new MediaCityUK development at Salford Quays in Manchester.
