Households in 2014 need 25Mbps broadband or less

Thursday, October 16th 2014 by Ellen Branagh

Households in 2014 only need broadband speeds of 25Mbps or less, a survey of industry leaders has suggested.

A poll of a group of leading members of the telecoms industry showed that more than a third thought the broadband speed households actually need in 2014 is just 25Mbps.

According to the survey, 2% said homes need speeds of up to 500Mbps, with only 4% saying up to 1Gbps was necessary.

The survey results, which come amid a push from many areas of the sector for gigabit broadband, were taken from a survey of members of Broadband 100 – a group of senior figures from the industry.

The group will meet at the Broadband World Forum, an annual telecoms, media and technology event in Amsterdam next week, to debate major issues for the industry, and continue to discuss them virtually over the next year.

In a survey ahead of the conference, 55 members of the group were polled on some of the issues facing the industry.

Asked what broadband speeds households actually need in 2014, 49 answered the question, with six choosing not to.

The most popular category was up to 25Mbps, with 42.9% choosing it, followed by 75Mbps, voted for by 20.4% of the group.

Just under a fifth, 18,4% said up to 150Mbps was necessary, while 12.2% chose up to 10Mbps.

Faster speeds received far fewer votes – with just 2% (one respondent) choosing up to 500Mbps, and 4.1% (two respondents) voting for up to 1Gbps.

Nicholas Lansman, secretary general of the Internet Service Providers’ Association (ISPA), said: “Average broadband speeds are increasingly improving and the UK has some of the strongest take up of superfast broadband in Europe, facts supported by Ofcom statistics.

“It is important to also look at the services and applications people are using rather than merely focusing on speeds. For many, up to 25Mbps supports these existing services.

“As more and more data-heavy and IP-only services become more common, and the transformative effects of much faster connectivity are felt and understood, more people will move to faster packages”.
