Plusnet business broadband review

For many companies, the presence of a 25GB data limit on a 18Mbps broadband package would be a deal breaker, but that’s what you get with Plusnet’s cheapest business broadband package. The thought of worrying about the cost of sending emails is not appetising, but there are a couple of saving graces here.

Its low price, UK-based customer support, flexible contracts and a range of call plans are enough to at least make a small business owner consider the option, but it's important to look across the whole package to gauge its true value.

Cable.co.uk overall rating
2.6

If you’re looking for the most simple business broadband package then this could work for you. However, it will lose value the second you add any extras, as because the 25GB limit is such a restriction. There are plenty of other, pricier ‘unlimited’ packages that are actually better value.

Speed & usage

Rating

1

Plusnet’s opening gambit in the business broadband market has issues. It runs at the standard broadband speed of up to 18Mbps which, while not the fastest broadband in the world, should be enough to carry out the basic broadband applications, such as emailing, browsing and downloading files, over a handful of devices. However, things will slow down dramatically when you attempt to upload files or use VoIP services, as 1.3Mb upload speed isn’t much to shout about.

The real problem with this package is the 25GB monthly usage limit, which even low internet users will find themselves encroaching upon pretty soon. If you burst through your usage allowance you’ll be charged an additional £1 per GB you use, so it’s worth keeping track of. Curiously, any browsing you do between midnight and 8AM will not eat into your data limit, which is great for nocturnal businesses, but renders this package very limited for the majority of customers.

Technical support

Rating

4

There are two layers of customer care on offer from Plusnet. Firstly the UK-based customer support centre, which is accessible via a 24/7 freephone number or online. This will put you through to a dedicated business support team, which should be able to solve the majority of your issues.

If you want an extra safety net there is the option of the Enhanced Care package, which can be added at a cost of £8.50 per month. Enhanced Care means that any faults you report to the Business Support Team will be prioritised to be ironed out within 24 hours, which includes any out of hours engineer repairs that need to be carried out. Any company that would be severely hampered by a fault would find this an essential option, and the extra peace of mind does not cost a huge amount of money.

Extras

Rating

4

There is a wide range of extras to choose from with this package, but they don’t come cheap. You can select it without a phone line, which alters the price a bit, but means you don’t have to pay the £10.50 line rental. If you do opt for a package with a phone line, initially you are on a pay-as-you-go package, which can be upgraded to a UK Anytime plan, UK Anytime Mobile and International 500 or the UK Anytime Mobile and International 1000 depending on your needs. You can purchase a number of additions call features in a bundle to personalise your account.

If you’re planning on setting up a website Plusnet will give you a free .co.uk web address, 250Mb of web space and one static IP address on demand. If you need a little more current upstream, you can increase your upload speed to around 2.5Mbps, which is still not particularly fast, at a sacrifice to some of your download speed.

Value for money

Rating

2

The initial package price and line rental are quite reasonable, even if you are getting a limited service. What really kills the value of this package is when you start adding extras to make it workable for your business. Once you’ve added a call plan, a couple of call features, Enhanced Care and increased your upload speed, you’re looking at a premium price for a package that will charge you if you download more than 25GB.

If you just want a basic broadband package with a pay-as-you-go-phone, you’d do well here, but the second you start to add things on top it is worth looking elsewhere as you are so hampered my the data limit. If you have been attracted by the one-month rolling contract, which is understandable if you’re working out of temporary premises, be aware that the line rental will go up, you’ll be charged for your router, the cost of the service will go up and a hefty £40 activation fee will land on your first bill.

Equipment & installation

Rating

2

Installation is free if you opt for the 24 or 12-month contracts, but comes with a fee if you want the one-month rolling deal. You will also have to pay a P&P charge for the router. Installation depends on what area you want to set up your broadband in. If you’re in an area with limited competition, Plusnet will charge you more per month. If you do need a new line installed Plusnet will aim to get you up and running about a week after you place your order.

You get the Sagemcom 2704n router thrown in for free if you plump for either the 12 or 24-month contract. This is a fairly substandard piece of kit that will get just about get you online, but will achieve very little else. It is a single band router, which will struggle to distribute a particularly fast signal over a distance. It is capable of supporting multiple devices at the same time, but if you were considering an expansion or a fibre optic connection, we would suggest upgrading this router before doing so.

Plusnet Sagemcom 2704n Router

Overall Rating

2.6

This is a basic, cheap, well-supported package that has been scuttled by the 25GB data limit. If you want a broadband connection for the most rudimentary needs, or conduct all or your online activity between midnight and 8AM, then this might suit you down to the ground, but the high cost of extras, low upload speed, poor router and expensive call plans will price most out of the market.
