Sky Fibre review

Thursday, November 12th 2015

Sky Fibre is the cheapest fibre optic broadband package from Sky and is, in fact, one of the cheapest on the entire market. For just £20 per month for the duration of the contract, you get up to 38Mbps download speed, parental controls, public wi-fi and inclusive security software.

However, unlike Sky’s two unlimited fibre broadband packages, this plan has a 25GB monthly usage limit, which is likely to be too restrictive for those who spend lots of time online. So is Sky Fibre right for you? We've looked through the detail to help you decide.

Cable.co.uk overall rating
3.4

Sky Fibre is a solid fibre optic broadband service with an impressive speed and a valuable collection of extra features. It’s very affordable too, but the 25GB could be too restrictive for users who love to download, stream and surf online every day.

Speed & usage

Rating

3

Sky Fibre broadband performs well on speed but lets itself down with its 25GB usage limit. If you’re a fairly light user or prepared to rein in your internet habit to get better broadband speed for a bargain price it’s definitely worth a look. This Sky fibre optic service performed particularly well in Ofcom’s latest review of fixed-line broadband speeds. Over a 24-hour period, the service averaged download speeds between 33.3Mbps to 36Mbps, outperforming comparable services from BT, EE and Plusnet. The research also found that 92% of Sky fibre customers received more than 90% of their maximum speed.

The 25GB usage cap will limit what you can do with this speed, particularly if you have Sky TV and watch on demand or catch up TV, or stream box sets and films via a service like Netflix. According to Sky, example usage options for 25GB include 30 hours of video streaming, 10 TV episode downloads, watching four movies on demand or 10 hours of online gaming. In reality, you might find you’re able to do more than this, but if you are doubtful whether 25GB will be enough, check out Sky’s two unlimited fibre broadband plans instead. If you exceed the 25GB usage cap, Sky will alert you via email and if you exceed it more than once in any six-month period, you will automatically be upgraded to an unlimited package.

Call plan

Rating

4

Sky Fibre no longer features a free call package. Instead, it comes with a pay-as-you-talk plan that charges for each call you make at a rate of 9.5p per minute to UK landlines and 12.7p per minute to UK mobiles. Premium and international rates vary and can be found on the Sky website.

If you prefer an inclusive call package, you can pay extra to get one. The options are Evening and Weekends Extra (+£4), Anytime Extra (+£8) and International Extra (+£12), featuring inclusive landline and mobile calls for up to an hour. Want to talk longer? Sky advises to hang-up and re-dial to avoid incurring standard rate call charges. Several call features are included free of charge, such as caller display, 1471 and withhold number, whereas others like call waiting incur an additional monthly fee. Line rental is included in the monthly broadband price.

Extras

Rating

4

Extra features are one of the big attractions of Sky broadband and this package doesn’t scrimp despite the low price. First up is free Sky Broadband Shield for the life of your contract. It is an advanced form of parental control software that can be personalised to suit your family, allowing you to filter what websites the kids can see with a rating system akin to movie age categories (PG, 13 or 18). Broadband Shield works on all devices connected your home wi-fi network, and the Watershed feature allows you to set tighter controls during the day when your kids are online. The safety features don’t end there and you’ll also get a 12-month free trial to McAfee Security Suite (or McAfee VirusScan for Mac users) to protect your computers, laptops and tablets from security threats.

Second, Sky customers get free and unlimited public wi-fi via The Cloud, which has 20,000 hotspots throughout the country. You’ll find them in many shops, restaurants and train stations, which is handy if you need to get online while out and about. Using public wi-fi also helps to preserve your mobile data allowance. Finally, the Sky Tech Team offers technical support both over the phone and with home visits to resolve problems seven days a week.

Sky advertises this package as one of the cheapest fibre packages on the market. While there are actually some cheaper deals around, the prices tend to be discounted for a short period before rising to cost more than Sky. By comparison, Sky Fibre is £20 for the entire duration of the 18-month contract, which makes it cheaper overall. You get a lot for your money in terms of reliable speed and useful extra features. Sky also has the highest customer satisfaction (level with Virgin Media) of all mainstream broadband providers, according to Ofcom.

The 25GB usage cap warrants the low price however, as it could be too limiting for users that spend a lot of time online downloading, streaming and browsing regularly throughout the month. If this sounds like you, consider one of Sky’s unlimited fibre broadband plans instead.

The Sky Hub router comes free with Sky Fibre, subject to £9.95 delivery charge. It features four Ethernet ports and a single wireless signal that can connect several computers, tablets, laptops, games consoles and smartphones at a time. The Sky Hub automatically switches to low power mode when not in use to help you save on energy consumption. It also easily connects to a compatible Sky+HD box to enable you to watch on demand programmes if you have a Sky TV package as well.

The Sky Hub is a single-band rather than a dual-band router and the fibre service is subject to a £59.95 activation fee, which is charged as a one-off fee. If you’re switching to Sky from another provider other than Virgin Media, you’ll need to request your MAC (Migration Authorisation Code) from your former provider in order to activate your new Sky broadband service. Once you have ordered online, it will normally take up to 15 days for your new connection to go live.

Overall Rating

3.4

If you’re currently on a standard broadband connection and it’s starting to feel sluggish, Sky Fibre is certainly worth considering as it is sure to boost your speed. It also has a permanently low price and is one of the cheapest fibre optic broadband plans on the market. The 25GB usage cap is somewhat limiting however, and an odd pairing with a fast service that would otherwise allow you to do a lot online. If you don’t spend a huge amount of time on the internet but want a fast and efficient experience when you do, this is the service for you. However, if you’re streaming and downloading every day, consider one of Sky’s unlimited fibre plans instead.
