How to compare and buy broadband and anytime calls

How do I compare different packages?

If you are looking to buy a combined broadband and anytime call package, you can compare broadband deals in our table above to find the right one for you. First, check what broadband is available in your area and then decide on your call plan. When deciding, take into account the price, broadband speed and monthly usage and you should be able to find a winner.

Availability

Some broadband services are restricted to certain locations, so make sure you check which broadband services are available in your area by using our checker at the top of the page. The comparison table will then show you what broadband choices are available where you live.

Check the detail

Make sure you check that you are happy with the package before making a decision. Take time to read through the terms and conditions and make a note of any deciding factors, like the length of the contract, the data allowance and call charges.

Why choose broadband and anytime calls?

The flexibility of choice offered by a broadband and calls deal means you can pick a good-value package that perfectly suits your needs, and keeps things simple by having just one provider as your point of contact.

Make UK landline calls for free

By taking an anytime option you can make UK landline calls for free at anytime of the day. This tends to include calls to 01,02,03, 0845 and 0870 numbers, but many providers advise you to keep the calls under 60 minutes to avoid any incurring charges. But if 60 minutes isn’t enough for you, just hang up and redial.

Call mobile numbers from your landline for free

If you are always racking up a bill by calling mobile numbers opt for an anytime mobile plan. You can call any UK mobile number for free from your landline. However, some providers put a limit on the amount of time you can spend on mobile phone calls – so keep this in mind.

Top broadband speeds and unlimited usage

Whether you are heavy on downloading movies and music or just like to have a casual browse, there are different broadband packages available. Download speeds range from up to 17Mbps – ideal for light users – to up to 200Mbps, which is far more than almost anyone needs. Plus, usage limits range from 12GB to unlimited, so there is something to suit everyone.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Free UK calls to landlines
  • Free calls to UK mobile phones
  • A variety of broadband speeds

Cons

  • Broadband availability is restricted
  • Anytime international calls are restricted
  • Free calls are restricted to 60 minutes

Which package is right for me?

When signing up for a phone and broadband deal, think about which anytime call plan you are going to purchase. This will depend on when you tend to make your calls, how long you spend on the phone, and whether calling abroad would be a useful option.

Call plan

Anytime calls are great for catching up with your family and friends, whatever the time of day. The only downside is that most providers restrict the length of the call to 60 minutes, but you can just hang up and redial to avoid any incurring charges.

If you spend most of your time calling mobile numbers, go for Anytime Mobile Calls, but bear in mind that there may be a limit on the minutes included. Anytime International Calls offers great value for making calls abroad. Just check which destinations are included in the package before your start calling.

Broadband

Fibre optic broadband offers a fast connection, ideal for heavy users who stream movies, and download music and games. Our availability checker will tell you if fibre broadband is in your area yet. If you just go online for emailing, social networking and browsing, the slower speeds offered by a standard broadband connection should suit you just fine.

If you are a light user who enjoys a casual browse, you could even consider a capped usage limit. However, if you are at all unsure of how much data you use, it is safest to plump for an unlimited package.

What will I need?

Here are a few things you will need to have when you get a combined broadband and anytime calls package.

You’ll need a landline

For calls –and for a fibre optic connection – you will need a landline running into your home. If you don’t have one, you’ll need to get one fitted by an engineer. You can use our availability checker at the top of the page to see if you can receive fibre or broadband connections in your area.

You will need a router

If you can get fibre, you will need a router to connect to your devices. In most cases, you will be provided with a wireless router once you take out a broadband and phone deal, enabling you to enjoy home wi-fi.

How do I switch?

In most instances you only need to contact your chosen provider. They will then contact your current supplier and handle the entire transfer process for you. However, if you’re switching to or from Virgin Media, you’ll have to contact your current supplier and cancel the services yourself because Virgin operates on a separate network from most other providers.

Ensure that you’re free to switch

Check that you’re out of the minimum contract period with your current provider before you switch. If you cancel your contract early, you will have to pay termination fees, which can get expensive.

Six essential questions before you buy

  1. How long do I spend on the phone?
  2. Do I need a fast broadband connection?
  3. Which broadband is available in my area?
  4. Will I need unlimited data allowance?
  5. Will I make many mobile or international calls?
  6. What contract length am I happy to commit to?

Cable.co.uk recommends

It is easy to go for the fastest broadband package with unlimited calls, and then find that you aren’t using your home phone very much or doing as much downloading as you thought. Equally, a cheap broadband deal might be more limiting and not give you the flexibility you need. So before you click and commit, think through how much broadband you really need and how often you actually make your calls, and then you can choose a package that will give you the best value for money.
