TalkTalk broadband reviews

TalkTalk is a broadband and TV provider that was established in 2003 as part of the Carphone Warehouse and later became a standalone company in 2010. Its broadband products are on the budget end of the market, with low-priced packages that are truly unlimited. Line rental is now included in all TalkTalk's pricing.

TalkTalk has a history of less-than-great customer service and security breaches, but is now smartening up its act. With guarantees of no mid-contract price rises and fiercely competitive pricing, TalkTalk is well worth a look.

About TalkTalk broadband

TalkTalk has some of the cheapest broadband products in the UK, and provides both standard broadband as well as fibre optic broadband. Its fibre service operates on the BT Openreach infrastructure, and, like most fibre services, is fibre-to-the-cabinet, meaning the final journey from the cabinet to your house is made over copper telephone cables.

All TalkTalk’s broadband deals are unlimited, with no usage caps or traffic management, making them perfect for high-volume downloading and frequent movie streaming.

TalkTalk broadband can be bundled with both television and mobile phone services. Both TV and TV Plus can be added to your broadband. TalkTalk’s TV services rely on a strong broadband connection (a minimum of 5Mbps for high-definition streaming) and come with dozens of channels that can be further enhanced with the addition of boosts.

Phone plans can be added for inclusive weekend and evening calls or inclusive anytime calls, and all phone calls made from a TalkTalk line to another TalkTalk line are not charged. Mobile plans are another option, and can also be added to your broadband bundle.

TalkTalk’s standard broadband is widely available across the UK. However, much like all other providers, its fibre services are limited, and only cover around 60% of the country. To see if TalkTalk broadband is available to you, enter your postcode below.

Broadband speeds underpin your entire online experience. TalkTalk’s fibre broadband has a maximum download speed of up to 76Mb, whihc is on a par with all other providers apart from Virgin Media. Streaming HD movies, playing online games, downloading large files and watching videos are achievable activities, and will perform without slowdown.

The cheapest TalkTalk broadband package has a lower speed, which peaks at around 17Mb. Although this is slower than fibre, is still fast enough for downloading and streaming videos and online games, though you may have difficulties if several people try to use the same connection at once.

Post your photos online faster

TalkTalk's top fibre package has an upload speed of 19Mbps. When it comes to uploading photos and video to social media sites like Facebook, a fast upload speed is essential. To get this speed you have to purchase the 76Mb package. TalkTalk's entry-level Fast Broadband package has an upload speed of just 1Mb.

A handful of extras come with TalkTalk broadband and phone packages. The two most important extras are free calls to other TalkTalk phone and broadband users, and the free HomeSafe online protection software.

HomeSafe comes with all broadband plans and is built into the network so any device connecting to the system, whether a home computer or mobile device, will be automatically protected against online invasions including viruses, spyware, and Trojans. It’s also useful for parents, as it allows you to control what your kids can and can’t see while browsing the web.

Line Rental now included

You no longer have to pay line rental on top of the package prices advertised by TalkTalk – it is included in the price. This makes pricing clearer, and TalkTalk guarantees that it will not change the price mid-contract so you know exactly what you will be paying for the full term.
