TalkTalk Faster Fibre 38Mb review

Tuesday, November 3rd 2015

If you want high-speed broadband without the high price tag, TalkTalk Faster Fibre 38Mb will undoubtedly catch your eye. You can take it with a home phone service or with one of TalkTalk’s TV packages for a three-in-one bundle.

TalkTalk are working hard to win customers, with a guarantee of no mid-contract price rises and extremely good value packages. So how does TalkTalk Faster Fibre measure up?

Cable.co.uk overall rating
3

TalkTalk Faster Fibre 38Mb is one of the cheapest fibre plans on the market with some nice perks, including parental control software and a free wireless router. However, TalkTalk's history of less-than-perfect customer service and data breaches may put some customers off.

Speed & usage

Rating

Faster Fibre 38Mb is TalkTalk’s entry-level fibre broadband service, with an advertised download speed up to 38Mbps and upload speed up to 2Mbps. This level of speed should provide a swift, seamless internet experience and enable you to download an album in about eight seconds, an HD film like Avatar in just over 20 minutes and a huge 39GB videogame like Call of Duty in two hours or so. That’s pretty impressive.

As is the case with all broadband providers, speeds vary considerably throughout the country depending on where you live, but the most recent figure from Ofcom suggest that most people will receive around 30Mbps on this connection. If you type in your postcode at the TalkTalk website to see if the service is available in your area, you’ll also be given an estimated speed at your address.

All TalkTalk broadband is truly unlimited, which means there are no fair usage or traffic management policies controlling what and when you can download. However, although TalkTalk won’t actively slow you down, network congestion at peak times (evening and weekends) can lead to an unavoidable drop in speed so you may need to rearrange your activities to ensure optimum performance.

Faster Fibre 38Mb is TalkTalk's entry-level fibre service and comes without any inclusive calls as standard. However, you can choose to add on the Anytime Calls Boost for £7.50. Calls are free up to a maximum duration of 60 minutes, so you’ll have to hang up and redial to avoid being charged. Line rental is now included in the price.

One of the main perks of joining TalkTalk is the free HomeSafe software included as standard with all broadband deals, which will be particularly attractive to parents of children with impressionable young minds. It allows you to block every device in your home from websites you believe to be unsuitable viewing and includes a function called Homework Time that lets you set a time during the day to block your children from accessing social networking and game websites, either seven days a week or Monday to Friday.

It does not include anti-virus software, however. SuperSafe Boost costs an additional £2 per month and will protect your devices against identity theft threats like phishing and spam emails, viruses and spyware. Handily, the Super Safe Boost works on devices both at home and when out using public wi-fi.

TalkTalk also offers a range of great value mobile and tablet deals (pay monthly and SIM-only) exclusively for its broadband customers. Current offers include SIM-only mobile plans from just £3.95 per month for a bundle of calls, texts and data, which is seriously good value.

TalkTalk Faster Fibre 38Mb comes with a very competitive price, which TalkTalk guarantee will be fixed for the duration of the deal – unlike some rival brands with low introductory offers that rise after a few months.

But does this low price come at the expense of anything else? Well, historically TalkTalk does not have a great reputation for customer service or data security, but is now working hard to address these issues.

TalkTalk recently upgraded its fibre broadband router and now offers customers the new Super Hub. It features improved wi-fi range and 802.11ac technology, which TalkTalk says will connect devices up to three times faster and offer a stronger, more stable signal. It also runs on dual band technology, which reduces the risk of drop-outs and interference thanks to sending a signal on two frequencies simultaneously.

A TalkTalk engineer will visit to set up your fibre connection (subject to a £25 charge on some packages) and you’ll be up and running within two weeks. TalkTalk fibre broadband is not available throughout the whole country. It operates on the BT Openreach fibre network, which currently covers around 60% of UK homes and businesses, so there are still large pockets of the country that can’t get fibre yet.
