Unlimited BT Infinity 1 review

Tuesday, November 3rd 2015

BT is the oldest and most popular telecoms provider in the UK. Its BT Infinity broadband packages offer the widest fibre optic broadband coverage in the country, available to over two-thirds of UK homes and businesses. Unlimited BT Infinity 1 delivers download speeds up to 52Mbps with no restrictions on usage, but is it any good?

We delve into the details on how the service performs in practice, what you get for your money and the value of extra perks on offer. These key facts coupled with our expert opinion will help you decide if Unlimited BT Infinity 1 is the right fibre optic broadband option for you.

Cable.co.uk overall rating
3.4

Unlimited BT Infinity 1 is a quality fibre broadband service with some great features, like BT Sport, cloud storage and unlimited free public wi-fi at over five million UK hotspots. It’s not the cheapest or fastest fibre service on the market however, so those more concerned about budget or speed than freebies might find more suitable deals elsewhere.

Speed & usage

Rating

Unlimited usage is what sets this service apart from BT's other Infinity 1 packages, which come with strict usage limits. Unlimited BT Infinity 1 is much more suited to those who like to download lots of movies, TV shows, music and other files throughout the month and don’t want to worry about hitting a set limit and incurring extra charges. Unlimited really means unlimited too since there’s no fair usage or traffic management on this plan.

BT Infinity comes with an impressive advertised download speed of up to 52Mbps. With this speed you can connect several devices to your router – including your smartphone, laptop and tablet – all at the same time. You can even stream films and TV programmes in HD without any disruptions - no buffering and no fuzzy images.

As is always the case with broadband speeds however, what you can actually receive will depend on where you live, so it’s worth carrying out a BT Infinity availability check with your postcode.

Ultimately, BT Infinity 1 is pretty fast for its advertised speed bracket, but there are far faster services on the market.

Call plan

Rating

3

All BT broadband plans require you to pay line rental as part of the monthly fee – there’s no way to escape it since a phone line is required to deliver your BT internet connection.

However, you’ll get weekend calls included as standard, which lets you call UK landlines and 0845 and 0870 numbers from midnight Friday to midnight Sunday completely free. However there’s a caveat in that any call you make during this period is only free for 60 minutes, so you’ll need to hang up and redial to avoid being charged.

If you like to chat during the week, it’s worthwhile upgrading to Anytime Calls plan to avoid being charged per minute for each call your make.

These call plans are pretty standard across the market but costs start to stack up if you want any of BT’s optional extras, such as Call Waiting or Call Diversion.

Extras

Rating

5

There’s no shortage of extra features with all BT Infinity deals, which goes some way to explain the premium price tag (see below). The biggest perk for those who like to get online on the go is unlimited free access to BT’s massive public wi-fi network.

There are over five million hotspots in the UK and a further seven million overseas, and once you’ve downloaded the BT wi-fi app you’ll be able to track down your nearest one and instantly log on.

Another nice feature is BT Sport, which you’ll get free as a BT TV customer. With BT TV you get access to four channels (BT Sport 1 and 2, BT Sport Europe, plus ESPN) on TV through the YouView box. If you just stick with BT broadband and don't take BT TV, you get one BT Sport channel for free to watch online or via the app, and have to pay £0 per month for the full BT Sport pack.

Further perks include BT NetProtect Plus, BT SmartTalk, BT Parental Controls and 100GB of cloud storage space. This provides valuable back-up and allows you to stash around 1,280 songs, 10 movies, 5,120 photos or 2,560 documents.

Lastly, BT offers SIM-only mobile plans that can be added to your package at a discounted rate. BT Mobile operates on the EE network, which offers 3G and 4G. There are three BT Mobile bundles of calls, texts and data to choose from and prices start from £5 per month.

We’ve established that Unlimited BT Infinity 1 is a speedy service with truly unlimited usage and a great range of extras. So far, so good. But then comes the price. BT rides on its reputation as a well-known provider and this service costs a fair bit more than comparable deals from the competition.

Admittedly you get a lot of perks included, but if price is your primary concern and you’re not fussed about keeping up with sports or public wi-fi, there are plenty of cheap fibre optic deals to choose from elsewhere.

Customer service is a measure of value as well and unfortunately BT’s standards fell below the industry average last year. In Ofcom’s latest customer satisfaction survey, BT was outperformed by Sky and Virgin Media, achieving 60% in comparison to the sector average of 67%. Although it’s not dismal, we expect better from a provider that has been providing telecoms services for more than 150 years.

Sign up to Unlimited BT Infinity 1 and you’ll be sent the BT Smart Hub free of charge (subject to £9.99 postage and packing). It has a range of nifty features, including technology that reduces wi-fi interference, diagnostics that alert you to connection problems and simple set-up to wirelessly connect any device with just the push of a button and no password.

There are two choices when it comes to BT Infinity installation – self set-up and engineer set-up. When you sign up, you’ll be told whether an engineer needs to visit your property and, if so, be able to choose an appointment time. With either option, your router will be delivered a couple of days before the activation date.

BT charges £20 for installation of all Infinity services. If you already have an active phone line, that’s all you’ll pay, whereas you could face a higher fee if a new line is required. If you decide to take BT’s Line Rental Saver plan, you’ll need to pay £205.08 upfront for the year at the start of your contract too.

Unlimited BT Infinity 1 isn’t the fastest or the cheapest fibre broadband deal around but it does offer a range of valuable extras. If you think you will make use of free public wi-fi and cloud storage and watch BT Sport, if could be worth the premium price tag, whereas if you are more concerned with budget, then you will find cheaper deals elsewhere. However, the actual download speed is impressive for its bracket of up 52Mbps.
