Virgin Media tops broadband download speeds chart

Friday, February 4th 2011 by Cable.co.uk

Cable.co.uk research found the internet service provider's average download speed is above 7.8Mbps.

Virgin Media is consistently providing consumers with the fastest broadband speeds, new research has found.

A survey of 816 people carried out by leading price comparison site Cable.co.uk ranked the company in first place for typical download speeds with a figure of more than 7.8Mbps.

This is significantly higher than the 4.4Mbps capacity available to the average user.

O2 subsidiary Be Broadband came in second with 5.8Mbps, with BT, Sky and Orange rounding off the top five with readings of 4.5Mbps, 3.6Mbps and 3.3Mbps respectively.

Chief executive of Cable.co.uk Paul France said: "Virgin Media's recent advertising campaign claims their broadband service is the fastest in the UK and the results of our survey confirm this."

The study follows hot on the heels of the launch of Virgin's new up to 30Mbps fibre optic cable broadband product, which hit the market on Tuesday (February 1st 2011).

Its fibre network is available to more than half of all UK homes, with over four million households signed up to the service.
