How to switch from Virgin Media to TalkTalk

Is being a Virgin Media customer taking its toll on your bank balance? If so, you may be considering a TV and broadband deal from TalkTalk to help lighten your financial load.

Switching providers is a straightforward process. If you are looking to change your TV, broadband and phone plan, we have all the answers for you. From what services are available to who to contact, here’s our step-by-step guide on making the jump from a Virgin Media package to a TalkTalk deal.

Step 1: Decide which services you want to switch

Be aware that you cannot take TalkTalk TV without also taking TalkTalk broadband, so there is no way to keep Virgin broadband and take TalkTalk TV. If you want to, however, you can take TalkTalk broadband but keep Virgin TV.

If you currently have one of Virgin Media’s faster broadband speeds (e.g. 200Mb or 300Mb), you will have to downgrade, as TalkTalk offers a maximum speed of up to 76Mb. However, this is still pretty fast and you shouldn't notice much difference.

Step 2: Sign up to TalkTalk online

Once you’ve chosen your preferred service, follow the sign-up process on the TalkTalk website. TalkTalk uses the BT Openreach network and if you don’t already have a BT telephone line at your property, you will need to have a new one installed by a TalkTalk engineer.

If you don't need a new line, you will just receive a welcome pack and a confirmation date for when your line will go live. You will also receive a router through the post, which you will need to connect yourself. It will come with a step-by-step guide on how to get started, so it should be a straightforward process. If you do have any problems, you can call the TalkTalk customer service team on 0203 441 5550.

Step 3: Contact Virgin Media to cancel

You will need to contact Virgin Media to cancel your current services, giving 30 days’ notice. The company will send out a letter to confirm your cancellation and the date your services will cease.

Remember that if you decide to terminate your contract before the minimum period is up, you will be charged a cancellation fee so make sure you check the terms and conditions.

Frequently asked questions

How long will the switch take?

It depends on how long remains on your contract with Virgin Media. You will, however need to give them 30 days’ notice.

Can I keep the same landline number?

You will need to contact TalkTalk, so it can check whether you require a new line or not. If you do need one, TalkTalk will arrange for an engineer to come to your home and install it.

Can I keep some of my Virgin Media services?

Yes. If you are happy with your Virgin Media TV, you can still keep this service. However, you can’t get TalkTalk TV with Virgin Media broadband and phone; you will need to purchase the triple package.

Will I be able to get catch up services and TV on demand with TalkTalk TV?

Yes. You will get seven-day catch-up on your TV, as well as a library of hundreds of movies and shows on demand, with TalkTalk TV Store, Now TV, Sky Store and Netflix. So you can watch what your like, whenever you want.

Conclusion

Although Virgin Media provides the UK’s fastest widely available broadband, it comes at a high cost. TalkTalk may not offer amazing TV or a super-speedy broadband, but it is enough to get you along and a way to help cut down your monthly costs.
